The debate over 'woke' investing, which significantly impacts ESG criteria, has become highly contentious in American politics. Republican leaders like U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are actively pushing to remove ESG considerations from public investments, arguing against perceived politicization and asserting concerns about fiduciary responsibility. Critics, including Elon Musk, dismiss ESG as a socially driven “scam,” while supporters contend it promotes sustainable and ethical investment practices. https://lnkd.in/gfB_SAFV

It's a wrap! We are sharing our most read articles in 2024. Today: Hadewych Kuiper's column 'Ignore the noise. Impact investing is on the right side of history' "Alarmist headlines, powerful conglomerates and so-called ‘anti-woke’ politicians are casting doubt about sustainable investing. But no matter how loud their noise, they can never prevent progress. Impact investing is on the right side of history", argues Managing Director Hadewych Kuiper. She encourages sustainable investors to stand strong and persevere. Like an oak tree against the wind. "I draw strength from the sometimes brazen arguments against ESG, sustainable and impact investing. Resistance is a normal part of change, and counterarguments make you aware of how others perceive things. They compel us to better articulate why we believe the financial sector should look at the ‘true return’ of their investment and replace their risk-return lens with an impact-risk-return lens." BlackRock, as the largest global investment management company, and a leading voice in the investment community on climate and energy transition-related investment themes, has found itself at the center of a vocal anti-ESG movement by Republican politicians in the U.S., who have accused the firm of following a social agenda, or of “boycotting” and working to harm energy companies. The Texas State Board of Education announced the termination of an investment with BlackRock, pulling $8.5 billion in funds from the investment giant, with a statement by the Board’s Chairman Aaron Kinsey citing BlackRock’s “dominant and persistent leadership in the ESG movement.” Read more below: https://lnkd.in/gxyGbaRg #ESGNews #Sustainability #BihasaConsultants

Investor freedoms and impact investing principles are under attack by those who seek to sow confusion and disrupt the ability of investors to make decisions that are consistent with their fiduciary duty. ? Meeting the needs of Americans requires that we, as impact investors, confront challenges like the climate crisis and widening inequality head on rather than bowing to the intended chilling effect of insidious lawsuits and politicized attacks. Black Rock (the world largest investor company) significantly reduced its support for proposals?addressing social and environmental issues according to Forbes, September 2024. But is this a mainstream strategy for investors to push back sustainable financing? ? To understand it more deeply, here is different type of investors and their strategies: ? Index-investor -> engage with only a small number of investees, might establish a framework to define where engagement efforts should be focused. ? Private equity investors -> engagement can be more frequent and robust. Private equity funds can contribute significantly to the performance of the firms in which they invest. ? Fixed-income investing -> Relations have been traditionally non-existent, but recent finding shows that “…signatories with fixed income investments engage with at least one company”. ? So, should we keep going on E&S agenda or this is not priority in recent environment? ? Sources: https://lnkd.in/eeRydemP ? https://lnkd.in/ejak6rhv ? https://lnkd.in/eKxf43Tw

Impact investments support business models that serve a good cause and aim to be economically profitable. They are considered the highest level of sustainable investing, says the author of this article, Dr. Christoph Kind. As many investors are increasingly irritated by bureaucratic ESG regulation and the dangers of "greenwashing", the demand for impact investments is growing. The United Nations' Social Development Goals have established a set of values that can be used to assess whether investments serve a good purpose or not. The biggest challenge remains how impact can be meaningfully defined and measured.
