For the first time in 2024, our full direct hire team gathered under one roof for a few days. It was amazing to connect in person, reflect on our achievements this year, and set the tone for 2025. The word I shared to guide us moving forward is Unity. We are only as strong as our weakest link, and we grow individually when we support each other as a collective. That’s how the best teams excel—across all industries. Take Dave Matthews Band. The group has seven members, but it’s named after Dave. He could have gone solo—he’s the face of the band. Yet their success stems from collaboration. Every decision, note, and song is a shared effort. Each member’s voice matters, and mutual respect drives their process. Even when Dave writes a song solo, the band works together to refine—or even reimagine—it. That, to me, is leadership: setting aside ego for the greater good of the group and valuing everyone’s contributions. And the results speak for themselves. Decades later, they’re still a must-see act. We’ve adopted a similar mindset in our team, from experienced Senior Managers to our Junior Recruiters. Every decision is a partnership, and alignment is non-negotiable. If one of us isn’t fully on board, we go back to the drawing board. Great teams thrive not just on shared goals, but on trust, open communication, and the willingness to truly hear each other.

When I was leading a large team at a hypergrowth Unicorn (you know the one), the pressure to scale quickly was immense. The mantra at the time was “move fast, break things” and “hire fast, fire fast.” It worked—until it didn’t. In the rush to grow, the pressure to fill headcount got the better of me and I let hiring standards slip. Not everyone interviewing potential team members were properly trained to do so effectively. We brought on people who weren’t the right cultural fit, and I lost the ability to connect personally with new hires like I used to. The ripple effect was huge: team cohesion suffered, one person's negativity could impact the entire group, and we tried to course-correct in real-time. It was a tough, but necessary lesson: never compromise on hiring standards, no matter how fast you’re growing. Fast forward to today at PlayAbly, and we’re doing things differently. We’re staying lean and intentional with our growth. We’ve developed a hiring process that’s as rigorous as you’d expect at a much larger, more established company. But beyond skills and culture fit, we focus deeply on relationships. For example, when onboarding, every team member shares a “how I work” statement so colleagues know how best to communicate with them. Every Friday, we close our week with an exercise called “If you knew me right now…” where people share something personal or professional they’re comfortable with. It’s a moment to reset, support each other, and build trust—ensuring no tensions linger and positive relationships carry into the next week. These kinds of practices wouldn’t scale easily in a larger organization, but while we’re small, we’re embracing them. They’ve become the glue that holds our team together. Lesson learned: The right people, strong personal connections, and a culture of transparency are the foundation of a great team. Scale intentionally—because one hire can make or break a team’s dynamic. If you have hiring tips, I'd love to hear them.

My team has been constant for the past 8 years. Do you know why?? ? Because I always look for red flags before hiring them. If the initial impression doesn't align with my expectations, I do not extend the offer. Despite possessing the requisite qualifications and expertise, if the mindset of the person or the attitude is signalling potential misalignment, I understand that it's not going to be long term. While hiring I always make sure that the person is determined to work with us for a longer period.? ? And here's how I ensure a good workplace at Trzy Innovationz: 1) Transparency: Everything is clear & transparent since day 1. We never give them surprises after hiring them so that they don’t feel burdened or burnt out later. 2) Encouraging diverse perspectives: At TRZY, we welcome everyone’s opinion and take it into consideration. Employees are equally contributing their ideas and feedback. 3) Cultivating value: We make them feel important by ensuring that employees feel aligned with the company's mission, vision and values. This also helps them understand how their work contributes to fulfilling the organisation's purpose. 4) Recognition and appreciation: We never overshadow our employees' efforts. They get recognition & appreciation for their efforts. By hiring the right individuals, I also ensure that they get the right workplace to work in. I know it's not easy to hire the right team in one go but the alternative—trying to fix a dysfunctional team after the fact—is an uphill battle that often ends in frustration, lost productivity, and missed opportunities. ? So, the next time you find yourself assembling a new team, always look up to red flags and ensure a good workplace for them. Do you provide a healthy workplace to your employees? Let me know your interesting hiring stories in the comments! #teambuilding
