Today when I first came across this I was a little disappointed in the timing. It’s on a Wednesday in the middle of the day. This eliminates so many from being able to attend. Then I started to wonder… we have so many young adults graduating in less than 60 days. How wonderful would it be if we could allow them to attend these job fairs. So I was thinking about how high schools offer “Comp Days” for Juniors and Seniors to go tour potential colleges. The schools fully support these days. So why can’t we use these “Comp Days” for other students to attend job fairs. Give these students that have no intentions of going to college the opportunity to explore and network other career opportunities. Some schools do bring a few select students to job fairs, but these are typically your high achieving students that are already planning to attend college. Those students are good, they have a plan. My heart is always with the students that are lost, the ones that have no direction. That’s the student that needs guidance. Those are the students that need to hear the success stories. When I post and say, share your story because you never know who you might be inspiring, this is what I’m talking about. Let’s make career fair/ job interview “Comp Days” a new normal.

Remember, as a candidate attending a job fair, you want to express what you know about the company, where you’d fit in, and what you can do to help them. Ask insightful questions about the company’s vision and growth. This means checking out the list of companies that will be there. Target ones you’re interested in. Study their site, make LinkedIn connections in advance of attending. Seek them out at the fair. Or better yet, contact them in advance and ask them who will be there to meet? Get the name of the person with whom you speak. You got this! Avoid attending and simply passing out your resume and asking them to tell you about their company. Reflecting on My Journey from the Military to the Private Sector Since retiring from the military in April 2010, I've had the opportunity to grow and understand what transitioning from active service to the private sector truly means. Here are some key lessons for veterans making this shift: 1.??Value of Military Experience: Unless you're a senior officer or sergeant major, your military experience may not be as highly valued in the private sector. While you might secure a supervisory or entry-level manager position, this is often due to having a degree rather than your military background. 2.??Understanding the Rules: Adjusting to the private sector takes time because the rules differ. In the military, experience and education directly influenced roles. In the private sector, these factors are not always understood or valued the same way. 3.??Quitting is an Option: In the military, quitting isn't an option—you see your enlistment through. In the private sector, the ability to quit is new and can be both a challenge and a temptation. It’s important to avoid job hopping, as this can harm your career progression. 4.?Choosing the Right Industry: Some industries, like retail, can be particularly challenging for veterans. High demands, lack of support, and leaders who don’t take ownership can make it difficult to succeed. Finding an industry where your skills and experience are valued and supported is crucial. 5.?Recruiting Veterans: Companies often recruit veterans for entry-level or junior leadership roles. Understanding this can help set realistic expectations and assist in planning your career path. Transitioning from the military to the private sector is a journey that requires patience, understanding, and strategy.
