We need to do a better job of empowering young people in Africa with education and healthcare if we want to make a real impact in the fight against HIV/AIDS. AllAfrica Global Media’s article illuminates the immense challenges that women and children experience due to inefficient resources — they are at heightened risk yet often lack access to preventative education and vital healthcare. There’s a major urgency in involving young voices directly in the decision-making processes that shape their lives. Thankfully, organizations like The Global Fund are already making an impact. Echoing their efforts, I am honored to contribute to the Ragon Institute of Mass General, MIT, and Harvard, where the FRESH program marries scientific research with community action. By integrating rigorous science with grassroots involvement, they are addressing the immediate needs while building a sustainable foundation for future leaders in healthcare. Public health facilities in Kenya must be deliberate in financing interventions intended to prevent and manage HIV. The Facility Improvement financing Act of 2023 presents a good opportunity for the facilities to solve their financial needs locally. To decision makers, remember facility improvement financing Act is not a replacement of all other sources of funds, but rather complementary. Domestic resources allocation and use in health, including HIV interventions should continue to grow because it's true the donor funds are shrinking. PATH is helping the Kenya Government to walk this journey to self-reliance.

Navigating the challenges of health crises is no easy undertaking. However, when war broke out in #Ukraine our Chemonics International-implemented USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management project jumped in to deliver 210,000 bottles of antiretrovirals, helping 150,000 people with #HIV maintain their treatment schedules. The team moved quickly and with agility to ensure the medicines reached the central warehouse in Kyiv. Alliance for Public Health: Ukrainian innovations attracted attention on the international stage One stand in the Global Village hall at the venue in Munich was particularly well attended: Ukrainian activists presented their app, which social workers use to reach at-risk groups virtually under the difficult circumstances of the russian war of aggression. It enables counselling or shows the way to frequently mobile laboratory or testing stations. NGOs and organisations have shown enormous interest in using this app in other countries, for example in African conflict zones or along migration routes, reports Andriy Klepikov, co-founder and executive director of the Ukrainian NGO Alliance for Public Health, which is dedicated to the fight against HIV/Aids in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Ukraine is a hub for innovation, emphasised Klepikov, one of three co-chairs of the conference AIDS2024. Thanks to digital and mobile solutions, control over the HIV epidemic has not been lost. The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is under critical debate. Some key points that are important to note are: ?? PEPFAR is the only disease-focused program that’s impacted and made progress on global health security objectives ?? PEPFAR provides HIV/AIDS treatment to global communities with high health disparities, though these are under threat of being taken away ?? It was a pleasure to host a satellite event at #AIDS2024 yesterday on the role of HIV self-testing (HIVST) in reaching the 15% of people living with HIV who do not know their status. We heard insightful presentations and rich discussions from: ?? Cheryl Johnson – World Health Organization – about WHO data showing markets can support adoption of oral and blood-based HIVSTs without technical performance disadvantages between the two products. Blood-based tests can offer opportunities for savings and scale-up due to low-costs. ?? Christian Stillson – Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. – about the evolution of HIVST market and that there are now low-priced products such as the Wondfo $1 HIVST, which should help with increasing access. ?? Geoffrey Taasi – Ministry of Health, Uganda – about the impact of affordable WHO prequalified products in kicking substandard products out of the market in Uganda. Also how COVID taught Uganda about the importance of supply security and hence there is more than one approved supplier of HIVSTs. ?? Ima John-Dada – Ministry of Health, Nigeria – about how to accelerate access to HIVST, through increasing supply, expanding access points, optimising distribution, and improving awareness through education programmes and campaigns. ?? Janet Tatenda Bhila – HTS Community Advisory Board – with a community perspective on why HIVST is a popular choice: because it’s convenient, private and empowers people to take charge of their health and status on their terms. As part of a Kakenhi grant I drafted at the University of Tokyo, our latest publication explores HIV disparities between Japanese nationals and international migrants during COVID-19. This research was first presented at the Asia Pacific AIDS and Coinfection Conference in Singapore. With limited nationwide analysis on health disparities, this research underscores the need for better data collection and more equitable healthcare access in Japan. Day 1 of #AfricaRegionalPrEPWorkshop (ARPW) in Nairobi, Kenya under MOSAIC , funded by #PEPFAR through USAID in the presence of World Health Organization (WHO). As PrEP Focal Person Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) Lesotho, I had an opportunity to be among representatives from >15 African countries, and stakeholders from America such as USA & Canada, and Europe such as Switzerland & Germany, sharing knowledge and advancing the fight against HIV. Today, discussions highlighted significant progress in #PreExposureProphylaxis (PrEP) strategies. From Oral PrEP to the latest developments in injectable PrEP (CAB-LA) and Dapivarine Vaginal Ring (DVR). We were also browsing into future innovations like Lenacapavir and Dual-Prevention. New WHO guidelines on both PrEP and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) were revealed, featuring updated recommendations on integrating #HIVSelfTesting (HIVST) for PrEP & PEP users. Together collaborated as Africans, and exchanging knowledge, we can fight HIV globally.
