A survey of 119 nursing academics across Australia found that digital health literacy was patchy and significant upskilling is required. The outcomes of the research, documented in a new paper by researchers from Charles Sturt University and RMIT University, found “There is a significant gap in nursing academics’ knowledge and confidence to teach digital health theory and its application in nursing.” Only 6% of respondents had received any formal training in digital health, and the approach to teaching and assessing the topic varied considerably across institutions. The researchers found that more experienced academics tended to be more confident about teaching digital health, but that considerable training was required to ensure graduates could be equipped with the appropriate capabilities required to nurse in health systems of the future. #highereducation #upskilling #nursingacademics #australianeducation #charlesstuartuniversity #RMIT

?This week on the Rural Road to Health we are joined by Prof Jean Ross from New Zealand. She shares her experiences advocating for rural health and rural nursing in New Zealand and introduces the Global Rural Nursing Exchange Network (GRNEN). ??"Last year (2023) the first ever National Rural Health Strategy was established and is now part of the government mandate in New Zealand." ??"Rural nursing has changed significantly over the last 30 years relating to legislation and regulation. Movement for continuing education for nurses and the Health Practitioner Competence Act." ??"The Global Rural Nursing Exchange Network (GRNEN) was formed so that rural nurses could share and exchange their experiences with others globally. Due to COVID19 physical exchanges were not possible." ??Education can be one of the challenges faced by nurses in rural areas, there is isolation, limited transportation, lack of access to services. The majority of nurses are women and often take on additional responsibilities in their personal lives and in the community. ?? Teaching Social Determinants of Health Through Service Learning: Empowering Nurse Practitioner Students ?? Incorporating the social determinants of health (SDOH) into nurse practitioner education is critical for fostering holistic, patient-centered care. At the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences Nurse Practitioner Clinical Education Program, we integrate SDOH into our curriculum through innovative service-learning opportunities that immerse students in real-world settings. By Caring for the Underserved in Unconventional Environments as part of our CUUE curriculum, students gain a deeper understanding of how factors like housing insecurity, donestic violence, food insecurity, and access to care shape health outcomes. These experiences challenge them to think critically, advocate for health equity, and develop solutions that address disparities. Key benefits of this approach: ? Builds cultural competence ? I had an excellent experience discussing the barriers and facilitators in program implementation with emerging scholars and program implementers (MScN students) at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto.
