I love working with people. It's a large part of the reason I went into recruitment, to spend my days working with lawyers and law firms - facilitating career matchmaking. I also love spending time with my family, friends, and baby Barts… But sometimes there’s nothing better than time spent alone, when you can reflect on life without distraction.?It's not always easy to find time to yourself in the busy world we live in, but it is worth trying to carve out some space (from time to time) so that you can: ?? truly rest. ?? focus on your interests. ?? encourage your creativity. ?? charge your social battery. I try, once a month, to take a day off everything. No work, no socialising, no puppy(!)* - just me. I've not had any chance to do it over the summer, and I am so excited to get going again. Every single time it feels unsettling at first, I find my brain thinking of everything I should be ticking off my ever growing to do list, and everything that I could be doing for everyone else. But once I settle in, I find it's where I either a) properly rest, and/or b) have some of my best ideas! It's time I can really work on my personal and professional growth. Don't get me wrong - I appreciate that as a founder, and not yet having children, it is a lot easier to be able to do that. But even less time, less regularly, but just intentional, can make such a difference to resetting. I love the buzz, the inspiration, the sense of purpose, I get from working and spending time with people... but making time in your diary for yourself is so important too. *Plus me and Barty do sometimes need time apart - and when I return he's always so happy to see me (see below) ?? ?? ?? ?? Hi, I'm Abbie - I'm passionate about career match making and mental health in the legal profession. Think of me as your Fairy Law-Mother. ?? #lawyers #law #mentalhealth #restandreflection

As a lawyer, I constantly look for a deeper meaning behind the questions my clients ask of me. It may sound like a "stupid" question but it often belies a deeper issue that needs to be addressed. ---------- This The Straits Times article talks about a parent-child interaction. But there are similarities. The author had a 11-year-old daughter (I have a son the same age) who asked her parents this question "Mummy, what if I become an artist?". The author's husband was very practical and he talked about how small the art market is in Singapore, and how hard it would be to make a sustainable income. But the author talked about the #possibilities, citing the new age of social media and the rise of instagram artists. Over the many months since that conversation, the author has discussed various career options together with her daughter, ranging from the more creative - such as hairstyling and home design - to the more professional, such as architecture. Most recently, her daughter expressed a keenness for the caregiving industry, such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy. What the author learnt was that when children come with difficult questions, they are not simply looking for career guidance, they could also be asking a deeper question: do you see and accept me as I am, even if I don't fit into your mould? --- That's a profound insight to me, and is something I constantly remind myself to do. Behind every seemingly "stupid" question is a need to satisfy a deeper issue. We just need to be patient and dig further. #weekdaymusings #professionaldevelopment

Observing our emotions, allowing ourselves time to pause and think about their sources (body, beliefs, history) is an important skill to develop. Like interpreting a language, it takes time and energy to learn to translate their meaning into workable thoughts and healthy actions. #mentalhealth #mensmentalhealth #counseling #counselor #selfhelp

Tackling the Effects of a Traumatic Event Studies show that law enforcement officers will experience 400-600 traumatic events throughout their career. An average citizen will experience only three to four throughout their entire life. Throughout my career I have been given multiple different strategies to cope after these types of events. I have learned that these events never get easier, I just get better at how to handle them after the fact. So, with that being said, I figured I would share the ways that I found help me the most. The following are strategies that I have found most helpful: -Debrief the Event: Whether that is with someone who was on that scene, another co-worker, or a peer support group. -Exercise: I am obviously a huge advocate for a regular exercise routine already (especially for someone in this career path), but I have found that exercise is my biggest ally after a traumatic event. -Express Your Feelings To Your Family and Friends: When decompressing from a traumatic event, I usually immediately call my father after it occurs. It helps that he is in this career field. He has gone through similar events, if not the same types of events. While I may share more descriptive details with him, I usually only share how I am feeling emotionally with my fiancée. The biggest thing to remember while sharing details is to know your audience. -SLEEP: After a huge adrenaline dump, I feel almost immobilized at the end of the day. While sleep may be a challenging task, especially after a serious traumatic event, it is the simplest way to keep your mind from running rampant about what occurred. -Religion: For those people who are religious, fall back on prayer. Find comfort and give thanks for placing yourself in a position to be able to help other people involved in that event. Use prayer to express your emotions and experiences that you may not feel comfortable sharing with others. -Seek Professional Help and Resources: If it becomes too challenging to deal with the emotions and stress from these events by utilizing co-workers, family, friends, or any other personal strategy it may be the time to reach out for professional help. Anyone I have ever spoken to about their experiences with professional help has had nothing but great things to say about it. To summarize, if you are in the law enforcement career field it is important to make sure you have a strong support system. For anyone that ever needs someone to talk to, I am always available. I cannot express how thankful I am for the support system that I have. Chief Chip Searson, Deputy Chief Arthur M., Sergeant Justin Brewer, and Sergeant R. A. Gillard all stepped up recently after an event. I could not have asked for a better support team! Have a great weekend and stay safe!
