Last week, Dr. Allen Ho, MD, FACS, FASRS, Co-Director of the Wills Eye Retina Service and Director of Retina Research gave the 46th Annual E. B. Spaeth Oration at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The oration, entitled Science, Serendipity and Listening to the Patient, centered around the idea that patients are doing better, particularly when considering the global prevalence of significant ophthalmic disease such as age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataract. An innovation ecosystem based on scientific discovery and translational research drives progress but luck and timing are perhaps as important. Our patients tell us that our work is not done, listening to their stories can help us improve and enrich our journey with them. The mission of the Spaeth Oration is to preserve Edmund B.
