“New power operates like a current, made by many, open, participatory and peer driven…like water and electricity, it is most forceful when it surges. The goal with new power is not to hoard it but to channel it.” ~Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms The consequences of the incredibly damaging freeze on US foreign aid will be seismic and underscore the desperate need for new models of collective action. At RFF, we are heartened to be working in Oaxaca, Mexico this week with Collin Assistencía Migrante and the amazing Kristen Corning Bedford to explore how grassroots networks are generating community-to-community models of giving and accompaniment that enable us as individuals to ameliorate global challenges. The humanitarian situation in the world is already dire and it’s impossible to predict the implications of US policy on refugee flows. Organizations like Collin A.C, which started as a grassroots volunteer movement of Mexican and American community members in Oaxaca, illuminate what is possible when communities come together in shared humanity to solve problems ???? If you are in Oaxaca this week please join us for this program of events.

Forest Whitaker: “It is always possible to nurture hope away from home – and it is always a duty for us to ensure that refugees and displaced persons can be offered opportunities to have a place in the world, which is of benefit for all.” On #WorldRefugeeDay, I’m sharing this blog post to honor the countless stories of courage, hope, and resilience. As we mark this day, let’s pledge a collective commitment to supporting refugees’ journeys towards a better future. Together, we can build bridges of empathy and create spaces where hope flourishes, no matter how far from home one may be. https://lnkd.in/ef4naqDU

??? Urbanization is reshaping our world, with cities becoming central to the dynamics of conflict, violence, and security. By 2050, two-thirds of the global population will live in urban areas, including small towns and secondary centers. However, cities and their unique challenges remain underrepresented in international peace and security strategies. Our new report with Peace in Our Cities highlights the urgent need for the global policy community—including multilateral agencies, donors, development banks, and think tanks—to address the implications of urbanization for peacebuilding and conflict prevention. As the number of cities in low-income countries grows by 76% between 2020-2070, ignoring these shifts may lead to ineffective strategies for managing conflict and fragility. At our core, we understand that the people affected by humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding programs are the ones who should be making decisions about how those programs are delivered. We work side by side with proximate communities and leaders to develop practical tools and resources that can be used and adapted for any context. Defining peacebuilding can be challenging, as its impact often depends on context, perceptions, and values. ?? The most practical way to talk about peacebuilding is to hear directly from those who have experienced conflict and are working to build peace. ?? During a recent visit to Guatemala, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support Elizabeth Spehar met with local Mayan indigenous communities, where the Peacebuilding Fund has supported local efforts since 2021. These communities, historically affected by land conflicts and displacement, shared their vision and hopes for peace. ??
