This is heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure. Shirine Khoury-Haq, successful businesswoman, daughter of a Turkish mother and a Palestinian father, recounts her life story, punctuated by 8 beautiful tracks that she would take when marooned in her imaginary desert island. It is a story of triumph borne out of adversity. The story of how the creation of Israel, when her father was 2 years old, wrecked lives and displaced families who just happened to be living at the wrong place at the wrong time. Living in their own country. And how it could have been done so differently. The creation of a place where Jewish people could be safe is unquestionable. But the way the idea metamorphosed into reality was wrong. Imagine if all descendants of American settlers were now removed from their homes to make way for the indigenous population who were originally there. One can only imagine the outcry it would provoke. So why was it different for Palestinians? Israel needs to choose between surviving in a state of permanent conflict or living in harmony. For that it needs to compromise and to abandon its bellicose stance towards the Palestinian people. It also needs to understand that the unconditional support of America may not last into perpetuity. There are great Israelis who recognise the need for Peace. Daniel Barenboim for example. Amongst many others. Israel needs an enlightened and humane musician to be in power and make the right decisions.
