As a continuation to my post from Monday where I shared about my involvement as a Board member for the School Garden Support Organization, I wanted to expand on my “why”. And why my purpose and passions are centered on supporting equitable learning, school gardens, sustainability, and representation. Today, the majority, ~70% of agricultural workers are foreign born migrants. They are the backbone of our food supply chain, yet often are not given basic human rights or access to the systems/programs we all take for granted. Often, they are the center of vitriolic language and unfair policies; Our farm workers do not receive the respect they deserve. I would like to see dignity and pride in farm work restored. I would like to see agriculture in all forms seen as a meaningful career path. An industry that is valued as significant and has high importance; And that we support through our education system. How can we honor our migrant workers, and the legacies of Caesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta? I think it starts by supporting organizations that teach youth the importance of gardens, farming, sustainability, and communities. It is then we can truly “Honor the hands that harvest your crops.” - Dolores Huerta #purpose #passion #advocacy #nationalfarmworkersawareness #sustainability #community #leadership https://lnkd.in/gccx4yyy
?? It's National Farm Worker Awareness Week! This week we honor the farm workers who are the backbone of our food supply and celebrate their invaluable contributions to our communities. ?? Regardless of the multitude of challenges farm workers face, such as climate change, immigration, lack of worker protections and pesticides, farm workers remain resilient and continue to work tirelessly to ensure that there’s food on our tables. ?? Stay tuned this week as we shine a spotlight on the challenges and issues impacting these essential workers and learn how you can help the workers who put food on our tables. ???? This week, please consider making a donation to the UFW Foundation. Your donation goes towards programs and advocacy for farm workers, their communities and families. This project was both fun and saddening. Over 1000 children told us why food is important to them. Many showed us that systemic #hunger issues are recognized even at such a young age. Some notable quotes: "If we can conquer space, we can conquer childhood hunger." "Hunger is something no one should struggle with or be judged for." "They got money for wars but can't feed the poor." "If you can't feed 100 people, then just feed one. One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well." "Food is important to me because I have food but not everyone has food." "Food is important to me because it helps you physically and mentally. Don't stop eating because you're unhappy with your body." "A pointed commentary on the class divide, how food is sustenance for some and decadence for others." #HungerActionDay #HungerActionMonth
It's Hunger Action Day! Today, we filled the James Renshaw Orchard with 1,500 orange paper plates decorated by local children to raise awareness about food insecurity. The 1,500 plates represent the number of students in the Erie Public School District who receive a bag from the Second Harvest BackPack Program weekly. The program discreetly places kid-friendly, nutritious foods in participating children’s backpacks on Fridays to ensure they have what they need over the weekend and during school breaks. 1 in 5 children in northwest Pennsylvania experience food insecurity. Join us during Hunger Action Month! Every action counts - whether you donate, advocate, volunteer, or spread the word. Let's end hunger together. www.nwpafoodbank.org #HungerActionDay #NWPAFoodBank #HungerActionMonth

Finding reliable food sources can be daunting for at-risk youth. Hunger not only clouds judgment but can lead to poor choices. That's why we're enhancing our core programs with a critical new initiative: Food Access, to help fuel every youth's journey. We provide meals nationwide–whether it’s a shared meal with a mentor in school, snack packs from street teams, or hot meals in our centers. Once youth have access to nutritious food, our teams offer regular food baskets and connect them to local resources–empowering them to regain dignity, build stable lives, and make better decisions. Help America’s homeless youth thrive. Your donation directly supports these vital programs. https://lnkd.in/eN8TeKh3 Have you ever experienced food insecurity? #StandUpInAction #FoodAccess #FoodInsecurity #EndHunger #EmpoweringYouth

Due to the ongoing war in #Ukraine, many regions face severe resource shortages and supply chain disruptions, making it difficult for people to access hygiene supplies. Greater Good Charities facilitates monthly distributions of hygiene buckets to help families maintain dignity and health by providing essential supplies often overlooked in aid efforts. There’s plenty of food in America; yet 1 in 7 people (including 1 in 5 kids) still don’t have the food they need to thrive so we’re doing something a little different this year.?To commemorate our third annual National Traffic Door Day, which celebrates traffic doors and the businesses that use them to keep customers and employees safe, we want to make a positive impact in the communities where we operate and reside. As part of our commitment to giving back, we are delighted to announce our support for Feeding America during the month of September, in observance of #HungerActionMonth. For every action taken, including posting a selfie with a traffic door, following the Chase & Eliason LinkedIn pages, liking our social media posts, and sharing our content, we will donate $10 to Feeding America. Furthermore, on September 28, we will double our contributions for each action performed. We believe that by coming together and taking these simple actions, we can make a meaningful difference in the fight against hunger. Join us in this initiative and help us make a positive impact in the lives of those in need. Together, we can create a brighter future for our communities.
