?? Employee Spotlight - Executive Coordinator, Shari Matteson! Shari has been with Grand Canyon Conservancy since 2022. ?? What has been your favorite experience while working for GCC? ?? I love Celebration of Art and have come to appreciate art so much since coming to GCC and being part of this event. As inspiring as I find CoA, my absolute FAVORITE GCC experience was when the board approved funding of all four priority projects during the 2023 Q4 Board Meeting. I assisted with preparing the materials for the NPS presentations the night before the Board vote, but the content came to life when the NPS subject matter experts presented their projects for consideration. When the Board elected to fund all four culturally significant and safety-related projects, I felt so strongly convicted by our mission and the impact that we have on this world wonder! It was truly awe-inspiring! ?? What part of your work is most fulfilling? ?? I feel so lucky to hold this position and serve and collaborate with our company’s leaders. For those who don’t know, I work closely with the Philanthropy department, the board, our Chief of Staff, and the CEO. I’ve got a backstage pass to the decision-making magic that happens! I love supporting the folks doing the moving and shaking at GCC! ?? Do you have a trail or viewpoint at Grand Canyon or any other outdoor space? ?? I love Desert View. The Canyon, the shock of blue-green water cutting through the rock, the Painted Desert backdrop… It’s just spectacular. For the first time in a decade, I took the eastern exit home, and I was reminded of what I love about northern Arizona. The red rock feeds my soul. ?? What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? ?? When I’m not wrangling my incredible three-year-old daughter, I enjoy working in my greenhouse garden, sitting on the front porch, watching my escapee chickens peck around, and connecting with family and friends. ?? If you were any dessert, what dessert would you be? ?? I’d be pumpkin pie- Best served slightly warm, it’s comforting and sweet, with a bit of spice. It’s a challenging dessert to execute perfectly, with the perfectly flaky crust (especially if you’re gluten intolerant like I am), the smooth and uncracked filling, and the careful balance of spices, but with attention to detail, it is sublimely classic. ?? Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? ?? Strangers are just friends I haven’t met yet! I pride myself on being friendly, compassionate, and helpful.

Preserving Costal Ecosystem with Mangrove Conservation Initiative under Guidance of Respected Dr Priti Adani mam A major portion of the human population of Gujarat is solely dependent on these coastal ecosystems for their livelihood. Thus, several mangrove restoration programmes/ activities are in progress in the state. Recognizing the critical importance of these ecosystems, as well as the vulnerability of the communities relying on coastal resources, Adani Foundation Mundra has taken proactive steps to preserve and develop these vital ecosystems. Adani Foundation has undertaken comprehensive efforts to protect and enhance mangrove ecosystems, spanning three phases from 2018 to 2020. Collaborating with the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), the foundation initiated the establishment of a multi-species Mangrove Biodiversity Park at Luni cost, Mundra- Kachchh. In Phase-I (2018-2019), we started a multi-species mangrove plantation work across 10 hectares. This initiative continued into Phase-II (2019-2020), covering an additional 2 hectares, and further expanded in Phase III (2020-2021) with 1 hectare. Consequently, a total of 13 hectares were dedicated to multi-species mangrove plantations, featuring species such as Avicenna Marina, Rhizophora Mucronata, Ceriops Tagal, and Ceropos Decandra, all of which exhibited a commendable survival rate. Since, some of the mangrove species are not readily available in Kachchh, their seeds/ propagules were procured from other districts of Gujarat and other states. These initiatives not only safeguarded mangroves but also bolstered fisheries diversity, with various marine species flourishing in newly established mangrove areas. Notably, the plantation site hosted crablets of the Scylla serrata species and mudskippers like Periophthalmus waltoni. Furthermore, catfish and mullets thrived in the intertidal zone, contributing to the rich biodiversity observed. The presence of various macro fauna, including Gelasimus tetragonon, Austruca variegata, and Tubuca dussumieri, among others, further underscored the success of the conservation efforts, highlighting the restoration of a vibrant and balanced ecosystem. In addition to Mangrove Biodiversity Park, the foundation accomplished mangrove afforestation by planting 7.42 lacs mangrove saplings across 162 hectares.While preserving the Costal ecosystem, we've also extended a helping hand to Kachchh's marginalized fishermen community. During the off-fishing season, provided them with invaluable employment opportunities through mangrove plantation initiatives. To date, we’ve facilitated 56,523 man-days of employment, not only offering financial empowerment but also building resilience within their community.

The Crosby Arboretum was recently designated an Outpost Business by the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area, opening the door to future funding opportunities. The 104-acre plant conservatory managed by the Mississippi State University Extension Service, was eligible for the award through its participation in Gulf Coast Outpost -- a business recognition program launched by the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area, or MGCNHA, for nature-based tourism business owners. The Arboretum’s designation was made Sept. 20. MGCNHA supports economic growth in the state’s southernmost six counties with an emphasis on the area’s natural, cultural and historical resources. It is funded by the National Park Service and the state of Mississippi and managed by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. The Gulf Coast Outpost program recognizes businesses and non-profits that take steps to protect the coast’s natural environment. It was developed in 2016 for the area by industrial stakeholders. “This is a wonderful recognition for The Crosby Arboretum,” said Pat Drackett, director of The Arboretum. "This designation acknowledges the many Crosby programs, events and daily offerings that foster environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation." Qualifying for the program makes the facility eligible for the MGCNHA Heritage Community Grants Program, which offers matching grants supporting projects that promote cultural and natural resources that expand economic opportunities in the state’s six coastal counties. MGCNHA is one of three congressionally designated National Heritage Areas in the state. The other two are the Mississippi Hills and Mississippi Delta National Heritage Areas. There are a total of 62 such designated areas in the U.S.

MOST LIVEABLE REGION IN SA Council has completed an extensive community engagement process for the development of the Community Plan 2044. This long-term strategic vision is designed to ensure we are the most liveable region in South Australia. During the six-week engagement period (20 May - 2 July 2024), we reached out to residents across the district through drop-in sessions, surveys, social media, and written submissions. Your feedback has played a crucial role in shaping this plan, which is structured around five key pillars: ?? Environment – Clearer environmental benchmarks, climate adaptation, and urban greening are key priorities. ?? People – Enhancing liveability, supporting positive ageing, and volunteer initiatives were strongly highlighted. ?? Place – We’ve addressed concerns about infrastructure development, public transport, and heritage preservation. ?? Economy – Support for local businesses and mature-aged workers is front and centre in our economic objectives. ?? Addressing Challenges and Embracing Opportunities in the West Highlands Yesterday, I had the pleasure of spending the day on the stunning Isle of Skye ??, engaging in discussions around some of the most pressing issues facing our region. The need for social housing ???, the imperative to free up existing housing ??, and the challenge of balancing policy and compliance with the need to incentivise our young people to build their careers here are all critical topics that require our immediate attention. As we work to capitalise on our abundant natural capital ?? and the potential of renewables ???, we must also ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to bring these assets to market ??. The delicate balance between hospitality and homes ????, tourism and renewables ??, aquaculture ??, and the broader economy ??, as well as the need for jobs versus perceived environmental concerns, are complex issues that we cannot ignore. Our business community in the West Highlands is uniquely positioned to drive positive change. By working together, we can address these challenges head-on, ensuring that our region thrives economically while preserving the natural beauty and resources that make it so special. I encourage all members of Lochaber Chamber of Commerce to engage in this dialogue, share their insights, and collaborate on solutions that will benefit everyone.
