A fun(?) bit of history for your Friday afternoon: did you know that International Women's Day was first commemorated back in 1911? ?? Each year, IWD has served as a global platform for women (and men!) to advocate for women's rights and celebrate the strengths and potential of women. Over 100 years later and its themes are still relevant - a reminder of how much work there is still to do. How can we accelerate progress and start to create meaningful, generational shifts? Here are my thoughts: let's actually listen to what women and communities want and need, and invest in those. Invest in education. Invest earlier and smarter, working together for greater outcomes. As we honor #InternationalWomensDay, we reflect on a century of remarkable achievements by women globally. Whether it’s here in our home state of Arizona or across the world, we know that education is key to inclusion and empowerment. Here are a few organizations who are making a difference: She's the First: Founded on the belief that education is a catalyst for change, this organization has empowered over half a million girls to “choose their own future”. CAMFED - Campaign for Female Education: Uplifting millions of girls in Africa, CAMFED is breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality. Girls Who Code: This organization is helping increase the amount of women in STEM by empowering over half a million girls and women to pursue careers in computer science. When women – especially those from underrepresented groups – are given the tools and access to succeed, our world and our state benefits greatly.

??Fellowship Alert!?? ??Equality Now, The OpEd Project, and Senior Advisor Ann MacDougall are delighted to announce the launch of the 2024 US Public Voices Fellowship on Advancing the Rights of Women and Girls. This fellowship, now in its third year, is part of The OpEd Project’s Public Voices initiative to change who writes history and Equality Now’s mission to create a just world for all women and girls. As we stand at a critical juncture for #WomensRights and #GirlsRights, there is an urgent need to platform diverse female voices in the media, championing them as experts with strong perspectives that can break down barriers holding women and girls back. To help advance this aim, we are assembling a cohort of 20 diverse thought leaders from across the #USA. We want to hear from inspiring individuals with innovative ideas and engaging insights about strengthening the rights of women and girls in a range of areas. ?? What you need to know: ? The fellowship entails 9 months of dedicated coaching and a further 3 months of follow-on support. ? Participation is free of charge to fellows. ? There are 3x virtual workshops and 1x face-to-face workshop in NYC. ? Full attendance in all 4 workshops is compulsory. ? A limited number of travel and lodging stipends are available for those who need assistance attending the in-person convening in NYC. ? Production of at least 2 articles is required, and we hope lots more. ? Access to weekly journalist office hours and regular expert talks with media leaders.
