“The fact is, the vast majority of young people go through school without a sense of purpose. Our school system does not foster it. The majority of schools and districts remain compliance-focused and attend narrowly to the flawed set of outcomes represented by our state’s accountability system, like test scores, attendance rates, suspensions, etc.” Roman Stearns thanks for sharing your story, the interaction with your son and his friend, your experience within Cajon, and your commentary about what is missing in schools. I often find that when parents experience these moments with their kids, they realize, in a new and more vivid way, how important early exposure to the world of work is and how important it is for kids to have meaningful conversations with caring adults about their futures. It’s a reminder of how learning about careers, by using job titles and student interests, provides broad exposure for the types of real opportunities that are available to kids, especially those who have little exposure to the world of work. As you rightly share- much of the credit goes to Dave Miyashiro and a board with as much foresight to understand such a gap exists in our schools. If I can be of service to Everett please let me know. I’d be happy to hear from him and share some career development ideas in case that is useful. Thinking about going to a private school? Please be careful and don't assume k-12 is monitored by the school district affiliation. The rights of college students in private schools may also not be protected, overridden by special interest categories, or non-existent. All private schools are for profit and their by-laws and policies may substantially restrict anyone from objecting to unfair treatment. Don't make decisions on assumptions of educational oversight. Read the policy statements before you enroll, understand how your civic rights are limited, and determine if you can live with their boundaries. The worst time to discover your lack of or limited protection is when you have been wronged. Just because a school is registered doesn't mean it is accredited.

Is this the future of education? Would you consider enrolling your child in a SLANT-based school? Advocates of no-excuses policies in schools argue that progressive, child-centered approaches that spread in the 1970s caused a?behavioral crisis, reduced learning, and hindered social mobility. The policy is called “Slant” (Sit up, Lean forward, Ask and answer questions, Nod your head, and Track the speaker). The argument in favor of SLANT? Wealthy children can afford to waste time at school because “their parents take them to museums and art galleries,” In contrast, for children from poorer backgrounds, “the only way you’re going to know about some Roman history is if you’re in your school learning.” Should we instead advocate for a balanced approach that offers all children, regardless of their economic status, access to an environment that fosters discipline alongside creativity and freedom? #FutureOfEducation #SLANTSchool #NoExcusesPolicy #DisciplineInSchools #CreativityInEducation #EducationalReform #HolisticDevelopment

Happy Public Schools Week 2024! As an organization committed to democracy, church-state separation and inclusion for people of all religions and none, it’s only fitting that we at Americans United are also staunch defenders of public schools during this week and throughout the year. Public education improves communities, reduces inequalities, forges common experiences and strengthens American democracy. Our public schools educate every child who comes through their front doors, regardless of economic status, disability, religion, race, ethnicity, English fluency, sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, family status or any other personal characteristic. In doing so, our public schools forge common experiences among a wide range of students: 90% of American students attend public schools. While it is true that our public schools, like the communities we live in, are not entirely desegregated, our public education system is one of the institutions where we are most likely to encounter, interact with and get to know people of different races, religions, political views and socioeconomic backgrounds. In today’s polarized environment, public schools play a more important role than ever in promoting unity. But unfortunately, those who wish to divide us and undermine our unity are relentlessly attacking public schools. Learn about four of the most dangerous attacks public schools are currently facing: https://ow.ly/8bzi50QHOUU

Only Moving Forward. 150 years post Civil War, 70 years post Brown v. Board of Education, and 56 years post Fair Housing Act, New Jersey schools remain among the most segregated in the nation. The state's Equity in Education statement emphasizes actively pursuing equitable education and life opportunities for historically underserved students, reflecting and valuing diversity, and reviewing all decisions through an equity lens. Nonetheless, Black learners are the 6th most segregated, and Hispanic learners are the 7th most segregated in the nation. IWEA partners with state leaders, school administrators, and community advocates to enhance educational equity through leader and teacher training, aligning curriculum to NJ DEI SLS. Contact us at [email protected] or https://lnkd.in/eb7u2WtT to learn how we can help you build the capacity for more equitable educational outcomes.
