One of our favorite happenings in 2023 was the Intermountain Foundation / Northwell Health Foundation exchange program. Each of our organizations is invested in sharing knowledge and deepening expertise to improve the world of health philanthropy. For this program, we each hosted staff from the other organization to help take our organizations to the next level in philanthropy. Thanks so much to our friends at Northwell Health Foundation. We’re looking forward to continuing to learn, share, and grow in 2024.

Navigating philanthropy in uncertain times is akin to a surfer riding waves. One must adapt to the current conditions, innovate when the conditions are not cooperating and use the waves to create momentum—ultimately propelling the program to the next large wave, initiative and impact. By skillfully riding the waves of change, organizations can sustain their missions, make a lasting impact on those they serve and emerge stronger. To be successful in philanthropy, we need to be thinking about our donors as partners towards a common goal. Those who support our organizations do so because they believe in the mission and wish to see the organization be successful. They want to be partners with us as those successes are realized and they want to know the impact their support has provided. For donors to feel like our partners, there must be a level of mutual respect that starts in our philanthropy offices with culture, specifically centered on gratitude. Culture is defined by our leaders and shaped by our common language, behaviors and attitudes. Think about the language your team uses when you talk about philanthropy. Is it rooted in gratitude? Proactive CEO engagement is much more than an appearance at the foundation gala or saying a few words about philanthropy at a public event. The CEO lends gravitas to fund development efforts, signaling to donors their contributions are valued and impactful. By leveraging position and influence, the CEO can open doors, forge strategic partnerships and mobilize resources to advance the organization’s goals. In essence, the CEO is not just a leader but a catalyst for change—a staunch ally in the noble pursuit of raising charitable funds to support and strengthen health care initiatives. Beyond the valuable donor-facing role of the CEO, the CEO has other uniquely important internal roles. "One insight we have gleaned is that making changes in practice is relatively easy. But trust-based philanthropy goes?much?deeper than grantmaking. We envision a future where nonprofits and communities are celebrated as essential contributors to social change. This trust-based future requires shifts in philanthropic mindsets and cultures, as well as the structures that scaffold them." - Shaady Salehi ?? Looking for some weekend reading? Philanthropy is joyous, life-affirming and noble work, but sometimes it is just plain hard. People and relationships can be tricky, so if philanthropy is based on relationships, why would it be easy all the time? However, the trenches of philanthropy can provide great opportunities for strategizing. They can provide time to regroup and often provide protection from the many barriers we relentlessly face. Protective trenches often demand close quarters with folks who share a common cause or vision while providing a great chance to bond. Those tiny spaces can also provide some hard-won truths. So, what truths have you learned while in the trenches of philanthropy? Read more from Accordant's Heather Wiley Starankovic, CFRE, CAP: https://ow.ly/NQE950SE6Y1 #healthcare #philanthropy

re: A small glimpse of our work from the frontlines of philanthropy For the last quarter-century, we've been right there with you, working on the frontlines of philanthropy. It's been an incredible journey, and it's shown us something truly remarkable: when philanthropy and brand unite, magic happens. When tearing down those old barriers and joining forces, the results are nothing short of spectacular. We have experienced firsthand this formidable partnership creating massive waves of fundraising and awareness that have propelled missions forward. These mission-moving results would not be possible without program participants and their families who courageously shared their stories and generously granted permission to us to share them. Some of the visuals and messaging in our body of work may evoke strong emotional reactions or discomfort for some viewers. If you feel that you might be affected by such content, we recommend proceeding with caution or choosing to view our work at a time when you feel more prepared. ??
