I am delighted to announce the release of the book co-edited with Anita Jori "Living at Night in Times of Pandemic - Night Studies and Club Culture in France and Germany", Transcript 2024, 208 p. (in English) ?? Club culture has become a burgeoning interdisciplinary field of research in the social sciences. The lockdown and health restrictions have highlighted the crucial role of the night and techno cultures — largely stigmatized during the COVID-19 pandemic — as places of sociability and safer spaces for marginalized communities. Taking a comparative perspective, the authors of this volume offer fresh insights into the field of night studies and techno scene in France and Germany. They explore three main areas: scenes and communities; diversity and inclusion; social and ecological challenges for a sustainable club culture post-pandemic. ?? https://lnkd.in/e6n2vc6r

Living in the UK and Europe, one big takeaway for me was how well they set up institutions. In contrast, temporary things like working groups and commissions tend to be political footballs in NZ. That's why I'm excited to share the Institutional Architecture Lab's guide to designing new institutions. The Edelman Trust Barometer from a few months ago was all about innovation and trust. The results show that trust in science, innovation, and its management is getting worse. That 30 hours of continuous work is very different from 30 hours of discretized work. To such a professional, giving money in compensation for time is not the same as giving back time to the professional. Giving back time to the professional requires having more doctors/surgeons/ER members of his caliber and stamina and capabilities. Its a good idea to give and save and bank time. Really is.

??Absolutely love this ??- not only from the obvious perspective of ensuring and gaining assistance when your older but, in a era where the social impact of technology is not yet know, it allows: - a focus on kindness ?? - person to person contact ?? - knowledge sharing across generations ?? - insight into what an older life may look like ?? - reduction in anxiety of growing older ?? -new skills outside of traditional ‘job’ ?? - a focus on future planning and consequences ?? And no doubt so much more. Let’s hope the UK starts to learn from these other countries who have an experimental mindset! Is there a better way to celebrate #OpenAccessWeek than to attend #LundOnline2024? Roughly a year ago, as the National Library of Sweden presented the new national guidelines for Open Science, one the speakers pointed out that it's time to stop talking about open science and start doing open science. I agree - looking forward to start doing open science and use SSE's excellence to strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness through research. What a vibrant discussion yesterday at the 4th Rencontre Elisée Reclus in Namur! "What innovations for what progress?" was the topic. It opened new perspectives, e.g. highlighting the distinction between technological and paradigm innovation, and stressing the emergent (autocatalytic, probabilistic) nature of life which cannot be fully understood within a reductionist and mechanistic paradigm. Preparing for the future means we have to create spaces for co-creation, for co-evolution with other beings on this planet. It also raised important questions. How can an R&I system increasingly controlled by extractive money become regenerative? We need Fourth Places. First place is home, second is work. Third places are community spaces. Fourth Places are dedicated to the future. The Fourth Place is where we reclaim our identity as civic actors responsible for shaping the emergent future. It is a place where we can bridge our public and private lives, manifest a sense of purpose as we do the work of imagining what comes next. We need spaces in which to ignite the revolutionary spirit of the French salons, where visitors understood their work as not merely the act of gathering but championing unheard voices, examining emerging narratives, and drawing upon their creative capacity to build new kinds of futures.
