People like Ben Kessler (2006 Tommie of the Year and UST student commencement speaker) and Harrison Butker will always exist somewhere in the dark corners of society that we like to pretend don't exist. You've likely heard Butker's speech or at least the outcry from it. You likely haven't heard Kessler's speech... which can be found here - it is triggering, and you can audibly hear cursing from the audience, FYI. This is what Chrissi Johnson, Danielle Shaffer and so many of my friends had to endure at their own graduation, the year before mine. Devastation. https://lnkd.in/g6c7Aacr For every clown out there using the podium to rewind history back to the 1950's, there are folks more qualified and competent delivering hope from the podium like role models and friends Jim Obergefell and Sara Cunningham. You likely heard the speech in 2014 at The University of Texas at Austin by Admiral McRaven. Perhaps one of the most epic speeches ever given from an authority figure with integrity, conviction, hope, and inspiration. https://lnkd.in/g6c7Aacr I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to return to the University of St. Thomas and deliver my own commencement address at the graduating class of 2024's Lavender Graduation ceremony. Whoopi Goldberg, I agree with your take. We all have a voice, and we all need to use our voices to advocate for our beliefs. The way to fight fire sometimes is by using fire of our own. Rather than hate, we deliver acceptance. Rather than vitriol, we deliver hope. Rather than intolerance, we deliver a celebration of diversity. Rather than dwelling on the past, we look to the future. I attempted to do this in my own way. You can hear those comments here: https://lnkd.in/ga7pnN8e

I think we should focus on circular economic plans that are Carbon Neutral , Sustainable and community based. I just completed the course on circular economic sustainability given by Cambridge Judges Business school. Our company is 100% African American owned with a board mad up of 70% women of color ready to help us head on a good sustainable path forward. We work in tandem with a 501C3 that celebrates outstanding underserved youth. Rochester is in a bad way and there is a lot of funding headed our direction. If you pay income tax, you need to show up and talk about casting your real vote. That is your economic one; and how development dollars are used in our City & Neighborhoods on the North side. #communitydevelopment #blackfinancialliteracy #cityofrochester
Rochester people! Here's info about an upcoming public meeting regarding the transformational, monumental, complicated (etc. etc. etc.) Inner Loop North project. I hope you are willing and able to attend! Thursday, November 7, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the World of Inquiry School No. 58 gymnasium, 200 University Avenue. https://lnkd.in/g6TuCwVD

To highlight, The CUNY SEEK program (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) has been a vital pathway to higher education started by Black and Puerto Rican students organizers recently celebrating 58 years (1966) of fostering academic success and personal growth. As a former SEEK participant, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of this program, which was designed to level the playing field in a society where educational opportunities are often unequal. The recent overturning of affirmative action highlights the ongoing struggle for equal access to education, underscoring the need to continue advocating for all students, regardless of their background. Capitalism plays a complex role in granting access to education and resources. While it drives innovation and economic growth, it also exacerbates inequalities by prioritizing profit over equitable opportunities. The commodification of education places a price tag on knowledge, making it accessible only to those who can afford it. As we move forward, it is crucial to challenge these systemic barriers and ensure that programs like SEEK continue to provide access and support to marginalized communities, helping them break through the economic and social limitations. #seekprogram #education

I'm loathe to criticize the University of Michigan as I love the university to an unhealthy degree, and I'm still reveling in the football national championship and 3x wins over Ohio. My experiences there shaped me more than anything outside of my family. So it absolutely pains me to critique the new Vision 2034 as a giant pile of focus grouped garbage that says nothing and means nothing. https://lnkd.in/g79MMqAi "Our vision is to be the defining public university, boldly exemplified by our innovation and service to the common good. We will leverage our interdisciplinarity and excellence at scale to educate learners, advance society, and make groundbreaking discoveries to impact the greatest challenges facing humanity." First off, this could be any public (why does it say public anyway, I want to crush Stanford, Notre Dame, and Princeton too) university anywhere in the world. And you know what I'm gonna stop there. There's no point in parsing this ephemeral banality pretending to be a vision. It's forgotten immediately after reading and cannot serve as a North Star since there is no there there. Simply put, a vision cannot and should not be predicated on the viewpoint of others. Nothing groundbreaking, bold, or innovative can ever come from this. DON'T LET OTHERS DEFINE YOU OR YOU END UP AS THE AVERAGE OF THOSE OTHERS. Michigan is not, nor ever has been average. This vision statement, however, falls far short of even reaching average and isn't remotely close to what we should expect from the leaders and best.
