?? Let’s talk about food! ?? Sometimes I tell people some of my work revolves around decolonizing food and food narratives. I have written and presented about gastronomic racism! This is one of the most common topics folks want to hear more about. For Hispanic Heritage Month, I want to urge us all to decolonize our food verbiage. You see, when we call Latino/Latin American food “Spanish” food, we are doing ourselves and our people a huge disservice. We are doing the colonizers’ work for them. And unfortunately this is one that our own people need to work on unlearning too!!! Arroz con gandules con pernil is Puerto Rican food, it’s Caribbean food. Pupusas are from El Salvador, they’re Central American. Tacos are Mexican. These are all Latin American or Latino foods. They are NOT Spanish food! Don’t say “I want some Spanish food,” and you mean arroz con gandules. Paella and tapas are two examples of actual Spanish food. Spain is in Europe. ?? Now: a post like this is NOT the best space for the true nuanced discussion that this topic warrants (but hire me to come speak to your organization about this!!! ??) but I do have a few points of clarification: ?? BORDERS ARE NEW!!! A lot of our foods have indigenous roots or come from periods of enslavement where folks had to get creative with ingredients that were not the highest quality. This means that while it could be argued that some of these foods are not from (insert country here) but from (insert second country here), THAT IS NOT THE POINT! Many of our countries share dishes and fight over who’s the originator but we should be proud to share these foods! Pan Latino solidarity!!! ??? (a bandeja paisa is a chivito al plato and you cannot change my mind!) ?? I LOVE ALL THESE FOODS! I love Spanish food (from Spain) so this isn’t to disparage it at all, it’s just that language matters. TLDR: LET’S NOT GIVE THE COLONIZERS ANY MORE CREDIT! This is OUR food, comida de América (el continente) the food of our people and our ancestors!!! What do you think? Comment below! ???? #food #comida #culture #cultura #decolonize #hhm #hispanicheritagemonth

The role of food in shaping identity and community 1. Cultural Identity: Food is deeply tied to cultural identity, as it often reflects the traditions, customs, and values of a particular group. The types of ingredients, cooking methods, and flavors used in traditional dishes can serve as a powerful symbol of cultural heritage and can help individuals connect with their roots. 2. Social Cohesion: Sharing meals with others can create a sense of community and belonging. Whether it's a family gathering, a potluck dinner, or a communal feast, the act of coming together to share food fosters social bonds and strengthens relationships. 3. Rituals and Celebrations: Many cultural and religious traditions involve specific foods and meals that are prepared and shared during special occasions and celebrations. These rituals not only reinforce cultural identity but also provide an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate their shared heritage. 4. Sense of Belonging: Food can also be a way for individuals to feel connected to a larger community. For example, immigrants may seek out familiar foods from their home country as a way to maintain a sense of belonging and connection to their cultural identity. 5. Culinary Heritage: Traditional recipes and cooking techniques are often passed down through generations, preserving culinary heritage and serving as a link to the past. By continuing to prepare and share these dishes, individuals can maintain a sense of continuity with their cultural roots. In summary, food plays a crucial role in shaping identity and community by serving as a symbol of cultural heritage, fostering social cohesion, and providing a sense of belonging and connection to one's roots. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #snsdesignthinking

Reflections: I received a message to spearhead the campaign to showcase South African Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) fine wines in Singapore. I agreed without hesitation. ?? Hong Kong has always been viewed as the gateway to China, and the de facto financial hub in Asia. In recent years it has lost it luster. Singapore (USD466.8bil), and Vietnam (USD408.8bil) GDP has surpassed HK, right after the events of CoVid. (Source: Google). #Prowine, #Vinexpo, #Decanter are some significant wine exhibitions that have followed the wind of change and prioritized Singapore. Even #Vivino, the global wine app has setup their first retail store in City Hall, Singapore as of Sep, 2024. The immediate challenge thrust upon me; was how could I get a nation’s palate traditionally trained on Old World to be interested in something else. Slight funding meant a marketing charm offensive was impossible. Thankfully, we had 2 advantages. Heritage and a good set of data. We were able to pull off some great sessions, with the right target audiences. As #KishoreMahbubani recounts in his memoir, personal relationship counts for everything when you need it most. ? No trails were set ablaze, but the ripple created would undoubtedly turned tidal sooner rather than later. This campaign also gave me a taste of the struggles our forefathers faced, when they had to go door to door selling our young nation capabilities. Importantly all was well, and some younglings Hadi Mohamed Dylan Wong gained lessons on management and cultural differences. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of my 2024. Celebrating Black History Month ?? As a tribute to Black History Month, we embark on an in-depth exploration of West African flavours. We look at the cultural significance of the iconic ingredients that continue to influence food traditions in North America. Black-Eyed Peas In West African meals, black-eyed peas, known as "Ewa" in Nigeria and "Niebe" in Senegal, are a mainstay. They have influenced North American dishes such as 'Hoppin' John,' a traditional New Year's dish in the Southern States, purported to bestow prosperity. Rice Jollof rice, a cherished West African dish, has become a staple in many North American kitchens. Similar ingredients and culinary methods are utilized in the Creole dish 'jambalaya,' demonstrating its influence. Our Atare Jollof Now sauce has simplified the preparation and enjoyment of this dish by providing straightforward recipe instructions on the jar, eliminating the need for prior cooking experience. Plantains Plantains are widely consumed in many parts of Africa, the Caribbean, Central and South America, becoming increasingly famous in North America. In West African traditions, these flexible fruits are grown and harvested, fried or boiled, and served with various sides and sauces, such as our versatile Atasu sauce. Yams Yams are very healthy and have been a primary food source in West Africa for hundreds of years. Yams have been an essential part of our food foundation, from Nigeria to Ghana. In North America, the word "yam" refers to different kinds of sweet potatoes; this shows how different cultures share food traditions. Many other foods and ingredients from West Africa, like okra, collard greens, and more, have become staples in North America. These ingredients and dishes represent more than just food. They symbolize a rich cultural heritage, a testament to the resilience and creativity of West African people and their diaspora, of which we are proud to be a part. We created Atare foods to showcase the vibrant flavours of our West African heritage and make them easily accessible to anyone in North America to enjoy. #BHM #atarefoods #westafrican #jollofNow #atare #Blackhistory #Blackownedbusiness #atasu

What cuisine would you pick if you were told that is THE ONLY cuisine you could have for the REST OF YOUR LIFE? A recent study in the US asked Gen Z this question. 45% respondents said Mexican. Latino culture in the US is on ?? From food to music to sports, the influence is everywhere Even though Latinos in the US are diverse and come from multiple countries, people of Mexican heritage make up almost 60% Coming back to the question of why Mexican cuisine is so popular? To be quite simple, the taste is part of it -- it's almost universal that Mexican and Latino food is delicious, flavorful and offers a lot of variety to choose from. Infact, I’ve seen the love for Mexican food in countries as diverse as #India and #Iceland. Additionally, the culture is infectious. Mexican culture is vibrant, exciting, deeply cultural, and connected to its roots. It's hard to not want to celebrate that and be part of it, even if it's something as small as eating some of their cuisine. I see this influence everyday in my work at AlEn USA. We take pride in understanding the Latina consumer intimately. And it’s so much fun to see the culture get so much ?? What do you find interesting about Latino or Mexican culture or food? ??
