December is a difficult month to maintain a routine, at home or at school. As soon as children see decorations or the December calendar, they feel the excitement and anticipation of the holidays. As parents and teachers, we may feel the pressure of growing to-do lists, expanded by the fast-approaching events for which we must shop, bake, or travel. It's understandable that everyone's stress levels may be going way up! Let's share how we plan ahead with our children.? We use our calendars to track responsibilities and appointments, set reminders and prepare for what is ahead. Sharing some of these strategies on the children’s level may help them regulate emotions of anticipation and excitement.? And we're also showing them how useful calendars can be! Mark special events like holiday programs, class parties, and family travel on a special countdown calendar or the regular calendar. Children can then see - and you can help them count - “How many days until ______?” This can also help us focus on each day rather than one big event. For example, “Tomorrow is the Christmas party at school, so today we are making cookies to bring!” At school, show children on the calendar which days are school days, how many days until a holiday program, and when Santa or another special visitor is coming! Using the calendar during center time to talk about these events makes it a more meaningful, hands-on learning tool than just a way to practice rote counting. And keeping it available during free play encourages individual counting and conversations. To get your own countdown calendar, you can find one in stores, or you can search online for make-it-yourself countdown crafts. Of course, you can make it even easier on yourself, decorating any calendar with drawings or stickers for special days and events! Let counting down to special days help you and your children focus on today! #earlychildhoodspecialties #playislearning #socialemotionallearning #childcaretraining #daycareowner?#earlychildhoodmath

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! If you're considering ways to show appreciation for a teacher in your life, please... consider the following (queue the Bill Nye music!) ?? give gifts that are consumable ?? ask what they like (not all #teachers are Starbucks fiends ??) ?? make it about them as a person, and not them as an #Educator (I always appreciated gifts that were something I could use and enjoy outside of #school) Some of my favorite gifts that I ever got as a teacher: - Movie tickets ?? - York peppermint patties ?? - A mouse pad (One year, I complained so often about my mouse not tracking so it proves that a kid was, at least once, listening to me! #Win) ??? - I had a kid make me a coupon book one year. Things like "Good for 1 'I won't argue with you'." and I'll tell you - I really appreciated that with this kid. Probably his parent's idea, but still - spot. on. ? - Gift cards to all kinds of places ?? - Foster animal things like blankets and beds (we fostered dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and even a rabbit when I was teaching). ?????? ?? Need some ideas? Ask your kids. They sometimes come up with really cool, off-the-wall ideas. Ask teacher-friends of your intended recipient. They often have great insider knowledge. Ask your own friends, especially ones with older kids. These people have been around the block - they know.

Christmas is often portrayed as a time of joy, magic, and togetherness, but for children with additional needs, the Christmas period can also bring unique challenges. Our CDNTs would like to share these 4 tips to support your child this Christmas. ???? ?Tip #1 Melissa our Family rep says: Try not to compare the Christmas you’re having to the storybook version you think everyone else is having. Remember-comparison is the thief of joy! ?Tip #2 Maintain Routines — as Much as Possible: Creating a visual schedule, involve your child in planning and balancing activities by allowing for downtime before and after high-energy events to help them recharge. ?Tip #3 Simplify Opening Presents- For children who struggle with fine motor skills, reduce frustration by adjusting presents and cards. Loosen ribbons, unseal envelopes, and minimise sellotape so your child can feel successful with little frustration. Unwrap at their own pace: Let your child decide when and how they want to open gifts, even if it means spacing them out over a few days or opening them in their safe space. ?Tip # 4 Educating family and friends: Share information about your child’s needs, sensitivities, and preferences to help others understand their experiences.

Here is more info about the three tips: 1. Are you wondering what stone soup is? It’s a vegetable soup that you can make in your class or at home - and you start with a stone! Of course, the stone isn’t to eat. It’s to re-enact the story of "Stone Soup" by Marsha Brown: “three hungry soldiers… outwit the greedy inhabitants of a village into providing them with a feast” (Goodreads). Read the book and then cook your own soup with the children. At school, this is a great cooperative activity that can involve all the children's families as they each contribute an ingredient to the soup. The children can safely cut the vegetables using a pumpkin-carving knife, which has a dull blade that won’t cut little fingers. My 4-year-old class of preschoolers really enjoyed this activity. If you try it, you may want to invite the families to join the children for your own stone soup feast! 2. Here are some more books about winter your children may enjoy: -The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats -Snow by Roy McKie and P.D. Eastman -The Mitten (Ukrainian folktale) book by Jan Brett -Snowballs by Lois Ehlert -Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson -Snow is Falling by Franklyn Branley 3. Here’s another fun activity with lights and shadows: Clip three shop lights (one red, one blue, and one green, then shine on a white wall. If you make the light streams intersect, you’ll be able to make different colors of shadows. It’s so cool! ??Want more ideas?
