??? How are you building a Culture of Community? Over the last six months, I've come to appreciate the word "community". It speaks of direction, support, togetherness, connection, safety, and openness… everything good about humanity. I'm enjoying helping organisations "build a culture community". We've done this at?Brightec,?and it's what we're doing through?Joyned. At Brightec, we've used our values statements as compass points for our mission: "To be a company that our customers love working with and our employees love working for." Values speak of who we are, and Mission speaks of purpose. It is on these two foundations that we're building our culture and our community. How are you building your culture? Commonplace acquired by Zencity: greater social impact Social impact invented Commonplace and we never looked back. We three founders believed the change we were creating was essential as the antidote to mistrust in political processes. Through Commonplace people shape their own communities on a trusted, transparent platform. Transparency is an essential bedrock for accountability. Transparency is the vital ingredient of Commonplace’s mission and its platform design. In just 11 years, Commonplace has reached some 10 million visitors to 3,500+ projects. Bar extenuating privacy matters Commonplace websites, and the millions of comments, are retained indefinitely and can be viewed without any barrier. This offer of Radical Transparency is almost unique in a field of GovTech that has burgeoned. Even our first MVP project, in East Shoreditch, London (launched 2014), is still online with its comments. Commonplace expands the source of local decision-making and keeps it visible and impactful. Radical Transparency is also making local policies and projects easier to understand and respond to. Commonplace reduces barriers to participation through its user-friendly variety of interactive tools; its smartphone-first approach and its multilingual capacity. I’m hugely proud of Commonplace’s impact and grateful to colleagues and investors for supporting our social impact led company. And huge shout-out to the bold public and private bodies who use Commonplace and in so doing accept a uniquely high level of transparency and accountability. Embedding this as an exemplary, widely-adopted norm in the UK is one of Commonplace’s major achievements. As part of the like-minded ZenCity, Commonplace’s social impact can spread wider, offering customers on both sides of the Atlantic a greater range of engagement services. Trust in the power of conversation to create strong communities ?? Earlier this week, we joined forces with members of the Marquette community to co-lead a meaningful conversation about inclusivity and belonging in our city. In partnership with Innovate Marquette SmartZone, the City of Marquette Arts & Culture, and Stone Hearth Consulting, we created an open space for community members to share their experiences, listen to others, and reflect on how we can foster a greater sense of belonging for all. The result? People showed up with curiosity and open minds. They shared their experiences, perspectives, and challenges. We listened to each other. We got to understand each other better. We saw what makes this community special and where there’s work that needs to be done. All of this is crucial to creating a community where everyone feels they belong–including those currently a part of it and those who may join in the future. This isn’t the first time we’ve reached out to hear directly from the community—and it won’t be the last. Together, Innovate Marquette SmartZone and the City of Marquette Arts & Culture have made a shared commitment: meaningful change begins and ends with community involvement. Strategic communication is key to making that commitment a reality.
