Incredibly proud to share my first PhD publication and the work Alex Tang and I have been doing over the past few years. Using spatial transcriptomics, we've mapped how repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is capable of affecting multiple neural plasticity mechanisms across different brain regions - even down to individual cortical layers! If you are interested in rTMS, check out the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gxckVG6r

Precision Neuroscience, co-founded by neurosurgeon Benjamin Rapoport and CEO Michael Mager, has secured $102 million in Series C funding to advance its minimally invasive brain-computer interface technology. The company’s Layer 7 Cortical Interface aims to help patients control digital devices with their thoughts—without penetrating the brain—setting it apart from Neuralink, co-founded by Rapoport and Elon Musk. As the competition intensifies, Precision’s physician-led approach focuses on safety, scalability, and solving real-world medical challenges today. To understand the complexity of the brain is to realize our current AI efforts are only a kid on a tricycle, pedaling to the moon. Key article quote: "The word 'fragment' is ironic," says neuroscientist Jeff Lichtman of Harvard University. "A terabyte is, for most people, gigantic, yet a fragment of a human brain – just a miniscule, teeny-weeny little bit of human brain – is still thousands of terabytes." --------- We'll get there, but we have a lot of work, most of it not engineering, yet to do. #neuroscience #brain #complexity #notyetAI https://lnkd.in/ehX7XE6u

Connections between neurons can be mapped by acquiring and analysing electron microscopic brain images. In recent years, this approach has been applied to chunks of brains to reconstruct local connectivity maps that are highly informative1,2,3,4,5,6, but nevertheless inadequate for understanding brain function more globally. Here we present a neuronal wiring diagram of a whole brain containing 5?×?107 chemical synapses7 between 139,255 neurons reconstructed from an adult female Drosophila melanogaster8,9. The resource also incorporates annotations of cell classes and types, nerves, hemilineages and predictions of neurotransmitter identities10,11,12. Data products are available for download, programmatic access and interactive browsing and have been made interoperable with other fly data resources. We derive a projectome—a map of projections between regions—from the connectome and report on tracing of synaptic pathways and the analysis of information flow from inputs (sensory and ascending neurons) to outputs (motor, endocrine and descending neurons) across both hemispheres and between the central brain and the optic lobes. Tracing from a subset of photoreceptors to descending motor pathways illustrates how structure can uncover putative circuit mechanisms underlying sensorimotor behaviours. The technologies and open ecosystem reported here set the stage for future large-scale connectome projects in other species. https://lnkd.in/dYhFNUzs

New research reveals that traditional resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI) may overlook certain neural activities, offering a fresh perspective on how the brain's regions coordinate during rest. Researchers compared blood flow data from rsfMRI with direct neural recordings, discovering that some brain activities, termed “invisible signals,” don’t align with blood flow changes. This challenges the conventional view that rsfMRI fully captures brain activity and suggests that unseen signals may play a larger role in resting-state networks. Overall , this study proposes that these findings may apply to human brains, potentially reshaping brain imaging interpretation. Which will help lead to more precise understanding of brain networks. Dr. Jeff Lichtman and his team at Harvard University, in collaboration with Google, created the most detailed map of human brain tissue using a 1 cubic millimeter sample containing 57,000 cells and 150 million synapses, generating 1,400 terabytes of data. The project involved slicing the tissue into nanometer-thin sections, staining them, and capturing 300 million images, which Google processed using AI to build a 3D interactive model. This unprecedented dataset, now available online, aims to advance our understanding of the brain's architecture and could reveal insights into various medical conditions, with future plans to map a mouse brain and potentially an entire human brain. #Neuroscience #BrainMapping #GoogleAI
