In March I keynoted the 50th birthday of the Children’s Pediatric Residency Program in Austin. Kay Johnson, David Willis, Charlie Bruner, my son-in-law Don Williams and daughter Lisa Doggett all contributed to my message about the importance of relational health in children's lives! I have included an except of some of the recommendations below. E-mail me at [email protected] if you want a copy of the entire speech. ?Being a pediatrician can be overwhelming.??While you can’t single handedly solve huge societal problems like poverty, I’d like to suggest two ways to use the unique power you have. Set up your practice in ways that strengthen the parent-child bonds, whether you do this in your practice or through collaboration with organizations which can address child and family needs you identify in your practice, and? Add your voices to those speaking out for children. My suggestion that you find innovative ways, whether in the hospital setting or an office practice to help families build safe, stable, and nurturing relationships that buffer adversity and build resilience should be familiar to you.?The AAP 2021 policy statement advocates exactly that. Parents can be your biggest nightmare. They can be overly demanding, unrealistic, disengaged, or worse.?But they are a reality of your chosen field.?All families have strengths, and want the best for their children, yet life’s stressors can make that difficult, especially when a child is in the hospital. Many parents also carry the history of their own traumas from earlier years.?But you must act on the belief that all families have the potential to heal and grow.? ? The more you can help build a strong nurturing relationship with parents, the better that child’s life will be. Children will face challenges of poverty, climate change, too much technology, peer pressure, and other things that we individually can’t change.?But we can help bolster a child’s resilience by supporting their parent’s well-being, so that they, in turn, can foster a healthy connection with their child early in life.?? ? Your challenge is to build a practice that is focused on optimal development and early, foundational relationships - not just the basics of a physical exam and immunizations.?? You need to use your interpersonal skills to build trust, respect, and authentic partnerships to engage families in their child’s care.? ?

?? Jumping Into 2025 with Purpose! ?? We assembled 50 beaded jump ropes for the National Double Dutch League! These ropes will support schools and youth programs, helping kids stay active and connected. ?? Physical play is vital for building resilience and improving mental health, especially after pandemic activity drops. These ropes are more than just tools—they’re opportunities for movement, fun, and growth. #GivingBack #YouthWellness #MPGivesBack
50 jump ropes assembled by MP: Wired for HR employees will be donated to the National Double Dutch League! To start off the New Year, MP volunteers spent time making beaded jump ropes which will help schools and youth programs create play environments where every child can join in. Children’s physical activity worldwide dropped by 20% over the Covid-19 pandemic, (per JAMA Pediatrics) and has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. It’s critical for children and teens to use their bodies to explore the world, which teaches them to fall and fail, reinforcing their resiliency. Without these critical developmental experiences, we see rising rates of anxiety, depression and attempted suicide in youth. These jump ropes will allow all youth to exercise and spend fun time with their friends. Thank you so much to the MP team for supporting the health and wellness of youth ?? #BeGenerus #CollectiveImpact #CorporateVolunteering

This is my first week back from a wonderful family vacation to East Asia, where we met family and friends, and explored this part of the world for our time together. I want to share some of what I’ve heard in my first week back Bottom line – people and organizations near and far use the HOPE framework to improve their work with children and families! Close to home, HOPE is flourishing at ?the Tufts Medical Center's Pediatric Primary Clinic.?Staff and providers continue to center positive experiences in the overall care experience, and they and the families they serve love it! Every week, the young patients interact with a poster board near check-in that features the HOPE - Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences question of the week. Fundación América Solidaria, based in Chile, intends to become our Latin American hub for HOPE. They offer HOPE-informed care in their work with foster children, and describe it as providing an “amazing” ?difference! We had a planning meeting for the California statewide child abuse prevention convening coming up on Feb 26 and 17. Many of CA counties have already incorporated aspects of the HOPE framework into their interagency leadership teams’ work.?Special shoutout College of Arts and Letters, San Diego State University's tireless Lori Clarke Clark for shepherding this along. One state agencies in MA has begun training staff on HOPE, and reports that this has helped staff morale and decreased turnover – more on that later! HOPE began with my work in pediatrics, and the many partners who care for children and families. ?However, interest in HOPE extends beyond age 21. I gave palliative care Grand Rounds Tufts Medical Center this week. We had a lively discussion of the application of HOPE at the end of life, focusing for example, on how grandparents can promote engagement and relationship with their grandchildren, even as the end of life approaches.?Lots more to think about throughout the lifecourse. Finally, we recently published the results of a scoping review of studies that evaluated the health effects of positive childhood experiences - including 220 papers published since 2018. This study was conducted in cooperation with RAND and the American Public Health Association, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adds a great deal as the work on ACEs and PCEs continues. See more @https://lnkd.in/eZrTmT45 SO there you have it – a week in my life:?HOPE with foster children in Chile, primary care pediatric patients in Boston, across California, in press, and throughout the life course.??Please share how you have incorporated the HOPE framework in our work!

A children's hospital (CH)[2] is a hospital that offers its services exclusively to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults from birth up to until age 18, and through age 21 and older in the United States.[3] In certain special cases, they may also treat adults.[4][5] The number of children's hospitals proliferated in the 20th century, as pediatric medical and surgical specialties separated from internal medicine and adult surgical specialties. Children's hospitals are characterized by greater attention to the psychosocial support of children and their families. Some children and young people have to spend relatively long periods in hospital, so having access to play and teaching staff can also be an important part of their care.[6] With local partnerships, this can include trips to local botanical gardens, zoos, and public libraries for instance.[7] Designs for the new Cambridge Children's Hospital, approved in 2022, plan to fully integrate mental and physical health provision for children and young people, bringing together services of three partners: Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, and the University of Cambridge with physical and mental health services located alongside research activity.[8] https://lnkd.in/d_N4826M Children's hospitals advance the health of all children from prevention to critical care. When it comes to health care, kids are different. Children need health care designed for their needs, involving families from start to finish and delivered by specially trained clinicians in environments designed just for kids. https://lnkd.in/d7cqTBnE.
