Do we choose to be overweight? The question is so simple, and the answer is so complex. I had such a wonderful conversation with my listeners today (until technical difficulties forced us to end early). I look forward to continuing the discussion this Friday at 9:00 am EST, where we will hopefully delve into the impact of things like adverse childhood experiences (ACES), medical conditions, social factors, and health literacy. https://lnkd.in/eJRJwJQP

"There's a lot of evidence now that web-based programs for all kinds of disorders can be very effective if done well. But still, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and others are not actively trained on how to use these technologies. Most graduate training programs don't incorporate any kind of course or specialized planning for how to do this." - Dr. Joe Ruzek It’s true: The training hasn't caught up to the technology in #BehavioralHealth. Luckily, Palo Alto University (PAU) is on a mission to change that, blending traditional healing with digital innovation (including tools like Eleos!). Curious how this evolution looks in real-time and what it means for the future of therapy? ?? Check out our new blog post for details on the latest research out of PAU — link in comments! ?? #MentalHealth #TherapyEducation #HealthcareInnovation

A big part of my mission as a social justice educator is to encourage other educators and mental health professionals to see their work as political. But when we do this without first examining and decolonizing our own thinking and training, this becomes dangerous. The medical model teaches us to decontexualize the individual from the larger political, social, cultural, and economic systems in which we live. When we apply medical thinking, to political we get results like the example here, which is in line with the overal problematic response of the medical industrial complex to the situation in the Middle East. Here is one of the most well known mental health professionals in the world today with a wrong, dangerous, and harmful read of the situation which to the average person may seem “reasonable.” Decolonial and liberation psychologies as well as critical pedagogies teach us that we must with a deep understanding of the nature of oppressive relationships. Western medical models on the other hand aim to present such relationships as equal. Entrenched in individualistic thinking, the emphasis in the West is always on personal choice and not systemic issues. Conversely, the solution is always a lone superhero saving the day instead of communities standing in solidarity together in order to change their material conditions. If you are an educator or mental health professional, or you work in any capacity in the healing professions, but you do NOT understand why this video is problematic, and you have NOT taken the time to read and educate yourself away from the medical models in which you were trained, please please please, at the very least, refrain from speaking on political topics. The power and authority you hold because of your position can cause deep trauma to those you seek to help. As much as I want every educator and therapist to engage in politics and to see their work as political, doing so without doing our own shadow work first harms and actually upholds oppression. If you’re interested in learning and understanding, I’ll be starting to share free resources, courses, and other professional development opportunities through my email list soon. #educationispolitical #therapyispolitical ##liberationpsychology #criticalpedagogy #socialjusticeeducation

While we have your attention, we thought we would talk about some of the changes to our author guidelines and why we have made them. ? The first change is the addition of a consumer and community involvement heading in the abstract. We have added this to support authors to clearly indicate if, and how, consumers or community members have informed the work beyond involvement as participants. This may include as members of the research or authorship team or in other ways such as an advisory board. ? Secondly, all authors must now write a plain language summary of the article. This is located with the abstract and ensures that people of all health literacy levels can read and understand an overview of the article. ? Finally, all authorship teams must now include a positionality statement in the methods. They are encouraged to outline their personal and professional backgrounds relevant to the work and acknowledge any biases or assumptions that they may bring.
