Became a trainer at 29. Initially got laughed at because of my age. By 34, I had done training for Asian Paints, #HUL, ICICI Bank & Mahindra British Telecom. Here's one technique that worked for me. Cold Calling: My first #fmcg client was HUL. Those days it was HLL - Hindustan Lever Ltd. I called up the board line, asked to speak to the head of sales training. Board connected me straightaway to the decision maker. 60 days later I had done my first sales training assignment in #fmcg. Same process worked with Citi India & Asian Paints. Asian paints had just launched a division called "Home Solutions". Traditional advice - start small. Start with the smaller companies. Then go to the big brand names. What I recommend, what worked for me. Start with the BIGGEST names in your industry. Why? 1. Decision makers in bigger companies are more confident of working with newcomers. 2. Smaller companies, on the other hand, will ask for "how many other companies have you worked for?". 3. Senior leaders in most companies are more approachable & humble than most middle level managers. 4. Larger companies have more volumes to offer. 5. Once you get the larger company brand name on your biodata, the rest of that industry welcomes you. I started my career in ITC Limited. My first #fmcg client was HLL. Over the next 10 years I did tons of work for some of the biggest #fmcg companies in India. Cold calling works. I personally vouch for its success. But it requires huge self belief. And a thick skin that enables you to to bounce back after multiple rejections. I got these big brand names after over 100 companies that I approached. 10 of those calls ended with the decision maker getting angry. Many did not respond, blocked by the receptionist. 3 clicked. That's the success ratio in sales. You have to sow lots of seeds that grow a few plants. And see a handful of them grow into trees. That's life. Changes. As small as the word sounds, often leads to big impacts. It’s been a month since I moved to Mumbai. Our identities are often defined by the #careers we choose. I’ve always been bold and fearless at my workplace, and a major reason was knowing that my manager had my back. Knowing that you have a strong, charismatic manager by your side can do wonders in your professional career. It’s incredibly important for your mental peace. People usually run behind big brand names and fat pay cheques, While it’s the manager you get who can have the biggest impact on your professional journey. Remember, ‘employees don’t leave companies, they leave managers’. I was fortunate to have got a great person as my first ever manager, who is going to leave a lasting impact throughout my career (forever grateful to you, Chetan Rane sir — whatever professional success I’ve had, I owe it to you :)) Here is a little story demonstrating the level of support I got from my manager when I was leaving Bajaj Finserv for higher studies — When I got an interview call from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, I informed him and he was extremely supportive of my future career plans. When I finally converted IIM Bangalore, I needed to leave the organisation within a month in order for me to start my next journey. He fought hard with the senior leadership to get my notice period shortened from 3 months to barely a month. That meant a lot to me. And it’s just one of the countless number of such incidents where he demonstrated immense support. Such people are indeed gems in disguise. I was lucky to have one as my manager. Feeling down about failures or rejections? This post is for you. #Living without #failing is failing to #live I have failed multiple times chosing the wrong career, yes, I used to think that way back then, But now when I #reflect looking back, I realize that each step brought me closer to where I needed to be. I started as an IT Faculty at NIIT Ltd. I was doing well, my boss was even ready to raise my salary to retain but something was missing, so I left to some thing else which I had no clarity about. A friend then suggested I use my science background (I was a top student in Zoology). So, I tried medical transcription and teaching the Language of Medicine. I loved connecting with people, but the subject didn't spark joy for me. Next, I worked as a Client Relationship Executive for Airtel in Sambalpur, Odisha. This role taught me valuable people skills and led me to recruitment and training. Finally, in the trainer role, I felt like I was HOME, to my space and my purpose and I felt so fulfilled and empowered. Since then, it’s been 15 years of my journey which has been incredibly rewarding and evolving. I help people transform and thrive in their lives. As we step into this new year, I’m excited to share a proud milestone from my journey. I’ve not only achieved the targets for December, the quarter-end month, but also successfully delivered the numbers for the entire 3rd quarter(Oct-Dec) - A journey that was as challenging as it was rewarding. This was my first quarter fully managed by me, and it came with its share of hurdles. There were moments of doubt, close misses, and immense pressure. But as the saying goes, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” and I can confidently vouch for it. Success isn’t about magic; it’s about focus, resilience, and consistent effort. Here’s a glimpse of my journey: October: Achieved 94% of my target, missing it by ?3 lakh. November: Repeated 94%, this time missing by ?3.8 lakh. These near misses were tough to digest, but they fueled my determination to push harder in December. December: With a clear plan and daily self-motivation. Achieved 116% of my primary target, delivering ?8.2 lakh surplus. Exceeded my secondary target by delivering 117%, contributing an additional ?9 lakh over the target. Closed the month with a 32% growth compared to December 2023. And delivered 103% Quater Targer numbers. The biggest lesson I’ve learned? Success doesn’t come from overthinking or being overwhelmed by problems. It’s about taking one step at a time, solving one issue at a time, and believing in yourself every single day. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my colleagues, mentors, and everyone who believed in me. I’m deeply grateful to each one of you for being part of this journey. Is cracking CAT enough? My initial plan was to crack the CAT with some decent percentile and then get into some really good B-schools of the country. Back then I knew IIM's like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Indore, Shillong and many others won't be shortlisting me due to my past academic background. So, I was prepared for their rejections, apart from that was dicy about the cutoffs for different institutes such as IIFT & MDI so didn't even apply, which I feel was one of the biggest mistakes I made. I was left with very few options such as IIM Amritsar, CAP Round, IMT and BITSOM and NMIMS. I was very excited for all the interviews, which will be my first step for my MBA life in the college. When the results were out for the same, I was shocked, depressed, tensed and confused. Why? Because I was waitlisted in Amritsar, IMT Ghaziabad (a very good interview), NMIMS (best interview I ever had and yet 6000+) and very average CAP interview and results yet to come. I had nothing concrete in my hand with no backups. So every night I was left with couple of questions in my mind, What's next? One more year? Will you be able to do it? These questions were very small yet very heavy. Suggestions?? : ~ Never miss any opportunity, take a risk and go for it. ~ Trust your process and don't be result oriented. It might take time but a good process will always give positive results. ~ If you ever feel like you have nothing concrete in your hand now, remember you came with nothing in your hand and you will be going with nothing in your hand and you have a lot of time to get something in your hand.
