Ever had a weird idea that had your colleagues (and clients) raising their eyebrows? And you still did it anyway… That was me, one Customer Service Week, when I decided to put hopscotch at the office entrance. I was then working at VIVA 365 Insurance Brokers and I was in charge of organizing CS Week, and I came up with the idea of putting hopscotch at the entrance. Yep, hopscotch. Will people play? Will they think it's fun or just plain tacky? Is it appropriate for corporate? So many questions, but I was all in and my bosses let me roll with it, thank you Emmaculate Cheptoo and Andrew Kimani—and you know what? It turned out to be a hit! ?? Hopscotch brought everyone back to their childhood—clients and staff couldn’t resist playing. It sparked laughter, memories and some of the best conversations of the week. This year’s CS Week theme, ‘Above & Beyond,’ reminds me of those moments where we step out of the norm and create memorable experiences. Here are three ways we can all go above and beyond for our customers—not just this week, but every day: ? #1: Personalize the Experience—small details make big impressions. ? #2: Listen Actively—real empathy goes a long way. ? #3: Create Moments of Joy—sometimes, a little hopscotch is all it takes! ?? I’ve always believed that a brand’s strength is reflected in how it treats customers, especially in challenging situations. As someone who was a loyal United 1K member for years, I want to share a recent experience that reinforced why I eventually chose to move my business to Delta. On a recent trip from South Bend (SBN) to Orange County (SNA) via Chicago (ORD), I encountered a cascade of service failures. First, United's app issues prevented me from accessing my boarding pass, forcing a detour back to the counter. Then, a flight delay led to rushed rebooking, resulting in confusion about my checked baggage. And as I finally boarded the Chicago flight with only minutes to spare after a sprint across the terminal, I discovered that my reserved aisle seat had been reassigned due to a “check-in error.” When I calmly asked to speak with a supervisor, the gate agent refused to accommodate, even insinuating that my only option was to wait until the following day to fly. I boarded feeling unheard, only to be confronted mid-flight by another gate agent suggesting they might remove me for simply asking questions. Upon arriving in Orange County, the promised supervisor was nowhere to be found, and I was directed online to file a complaint instead. As customers, we should never feel dismissed or pressured, especially when voicing a valid concern. Sadly, this experience has become a recurring theme, reminding me why I ultimately switched my loyalty to Delta, where respect for customer experience remains paramount. To the United team: I hope these stories are used to drive real improvements in service, ensuring your customers feel valued and supported.
