#matieland ?? Initially, many across the globe regarded bioplastics (plastic that is either biobased, biodegradable, or a combination of the two) as the silver bullet against plastic pollution. Yet bioplastic waste is on the rise. In fact, most bioplastic waste ends up in landfill or being incinerated. But Wessel?Myburgh and Dominique Rocher, both PhD candidates at Stellenbosch University (SU), might have the solution for waste management companies who battle with this challenge. The technology that Wessel is developing uses microbial enzymes to break down certain types of plastics – especially bioplastics – and potentially recycle them into valuable fuels and chemicals. ???????? ????????: https://bit.ly/3IhiVSz

Future materials/products/services/experiences will need to offer superiority (or at least parity) in performance/experience AND have circularity built-in to successfully compete with the status quo. Branding matters as the value signal here. 2) In a world moving toward “valorizing” waste streams and circular economies, what should “waste” be called? Waste is a man-made side effect of wasteful industrial fabrication, but nature, a closed-loop ecosystem, knows no waste. 3) Synbio is a critical accelerant to our world’s transition toward circularity, transforming inert waste into material value. And lastly, a fun and dizzying visualization question by Kit: “How many small circles are circling on the inside of the one global circle of circularity”?
