Connecting Academia & Industry through Entrepreneurial Mindset in BME Biomedical engineers are expert connectors, and this ability was clear at our panel session at the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Annual Meeting in Baltimore. Our session, Engineering Your Entrepreneurial Mindset, brought together academic and industry leaders to share insights on fostering the Entrepreneurial Mindset (EM) in biomedical engineering. ?? What we explored: Our diverse panel featured professionals from Duke, Medtronic, SeaSpine-OrthoFix, Rowan, Valparaiso, UPenn, Rice, and RoBokeh. Together, we discussed how to inspire students and new hires to be: Resilient: Balancing risk portfolios for new engineers, to give them experiences in both high-risk and low-risk innovations. Value Creators: Helping new engineers articulate and manage conflicting values across several stakeholders. Curious: Embedding them in patient care environments to encourage their natural curiosity and consider different viewpoints. Happy to share that just started as Professor of Practice, and Director of Professional Master's Programs in the Department of Bioengineering at University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering. Reunites me, after a 10-year stint in industry (thanks InCube Labs - good to make a few dents in the universe while there) with a great institution, supportive administration and incredible faculty colleagues and staff, complemented by world-class clinicians, biomedical researchers and hospital/healthcare leaders at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, UPMC, and UPMC Health Plan as well as a very supportive business community. The goal is to advance and expand our MS offerings using my 4 decades in the medtech field to: 1) Enroll more students in the MS-MPE (Medical Product Engineering) program that has been successfully implemented for more than 10 years now 2) Re-invigorate the existing MS-MBA program offered in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business 3) Design, develop and introduce more domain focused Professional MS degree offerings in addition to the existing MS-Neural Engineering. Looking forward to use my gleaned experience and professional network to give enrolled students additional exposure to real-world cases and situations, hands-on 'learning by doing', mentoring/ advising, opening doors with key stakeholders, and discussing relevant topics for more career choices, paths and opportunities post-graduation for our students to make even more meaningful impact on healthcare and outcomes.
