Here’s a thought exercise for your Friday morning. I’ve been asked to censor the speech of an amazing and diverse group of creatives, who we enthusiastically supported to create an ear worm of a rock anthem called (Our Love is) Geothermal. I declined. The request and my response are in the comments. The video is in the repost. This request for me begs a bigger question about humans - about how we expect to solve problems together under the pressure of existential crisis. I think the nature of this request is a small study of a greater human condition right now - a condition that likely threatens us more than climate change itself. We are beyond polarized, tribal, living in echo chambers, and so unwilling to allow for viewpoints that are different from our own that villianization, dehumanization, and cancel culture has become almost a knee jerk reaction. Vocal minorities shout over silent majorities. Energy, enthusiasm - even hope - drowns in petty conflict. Cancel culture is the intellectually easy route when presented with a viewpoint different from our own. The hard work - the work that humans urgently need to do right this second - is to sit with people and viewpoints that we may not agree with, try to understand, find common ground, and build together despite acknowledged differences. This is not easy work - but it is an urgent necessity if our goal is progress. At InnerSpace, we have pitched a big and wide tent - welcoming creators, environmentalists, oil and gas industry voices, and everyone in between - including a purposeful diversity of viewpoints - to help us build the future of geothermal energy. It’s work and progress that I am proud of. I am similarly proud of the creators of our geothermal love song. If there is anything the world needs more of right now - it’s love and geothermal. And also love FOR geothermal. Let’s also add in fun and laughter. In my view, the song threads that needle pretty well. That’s my take. Feel free to add yours to the comments. #IGC2024, #Geothermal All around the globe, tectonic plate boundaries concentrate tremendous amounts of energy, often manifested by active volcanoes ?? . Coming from the Caribbean, where the hundred-million-year-old crust disappears in a subduction zone, I am thrilled to meet my fellow workers in Iceland, where new crust is being created in an accretion zone. These two marvelous geological contexts give rise to the red Icelandic volcanoes and the gray ones such as La Montagne Pelée in Martinique. Despite their different geological contexts, both regions can be exploited for the development of geothermal energy ?. The "power from these volcanoes" can be harnessed as renewable energy, even catering to the daily charging of your smartphone. How impressive !?! Thankfully, as technology evolves, geothermal energy can also be exploited in regions that are not “gifted” with volcanic activity. This is the case in countries like Belgium, where the heat demand accounts for up to 50% of national energy consumption.
