Yay, I've finally closed my friends and family round ?? After many discussions with my nearest and dearest I've managed to raise a grand total of £53.72!!! In all seriousness, following on from this year's IWD theme, Investing in Women, more action has to happen so that underrepresented founders in this space are supported. Not all founders have family. Not all founders have a family they speak to. Not all founders have family with any disposable income. Not all founders have friends and if they did they probably lost most of them due to building a startup! Not all founders went to university. Not all founders have had a corporate career. Not all founders have a network. The current investment landscape is broken and I don't have the answers to fix it. But what I do know is with or without investment, despite the disparities a lot of women build amazing businesses. Something Cindy Gallop wrote the other day really resonated with me and my own journey so far "white men get funded on potential. White women get funded on proof, and not often even then, and black women and people, and women of colour don't even get funded." I've experienced sexism and misogyny and repeatedly get told I need more traction. Despite a 22 year nursing career and generating revenue from paid proof of concepts it's not enough. Yet I see male counterparts in the same space, with no clinical background, no revenue, get money pumped into their startups. It sounds like sour grapes and it's really not. What it is, is tiredness and exhaustion from continuously fighting. It's anger from the lack of; transparency, honesty, equality, equity, and I could go on. One thing's for sure, despite all of this, I continue to build my business with my knowledge and experience and the knowing that I have the ability to execute on my plans, make lots of money and all due to impact and change. Adversity is not new to me and it is a fuel for disruption and success, so keep watching this space ?? P.S if you've got this far and are actively investing, I have a shit load of SEIS allowance left, so get in touch if you'd like to take advantage of the benefits that comes with and if you like to back a winner ???? #investinginsights #seis #investinginwomen #founderstories #womenintech
Super write up this! Thank you for writing about your personal experience. So important to be vocal about it. For others to read about the struggle of starting from ground zero. Without a network with networth behind you as you built. You've got total 'with or without you' energy. Referring to the fact that you're on a mission and if people don't want to be a part of it, you find a way to make it happen anyway. ??
I love this post Emma-Louise. I've always pushed back against the idea that it is easy for founders to just go and get a hundred grand from friends and family like it's easy. ?? Really p***ses me off actually!
LOVE this photo of you ???? Emma-Louise Fusari RGN ??
What a post! And what a great picture Emma! That quote will deffo stay with me: “white men get funded on potential. White women get funded on proof, and not often even then, and women of colour don't even get funded” Feeling exhausted by this broken system is completely understandable. But using that as fuel for your winner mindset is commendable ?? I wanna see your pitch deck too ??♀?
I feel this SO much ???? Emma-Louise Fusari RGN! I was so disillusioned with the prevalent funding models and how they only allowed me to support founders who were already dripping in privilege that I turned myself into a fractional so I can help more people who can't afford full-time support to build a business. I figured the system wasn't working for anyone else, so let's build a bloody new one.
Personally. If I was seeking investment and came across this post laying out the tired narrative of "white men have it easier" rightly or wrongly- I would be a hard next. Right next to your current success are innumerable others who can easily latch onto "excuses" about the landscape, but those excuses never do forge a solid founder. I am wishing your venture the best of success. -Matthew.
So disheartening to hear the experiences we spoke about last time have continued for you Emma. The disparity between those that need to prove themselves compared to those that get by on potential is something I've witnessed also. Good on you for being open and sharing your experience to pull that behaviour into the light. Hopefully it keeps encourages more and more people to check their biases.
Absolutely love every word - and it gets fairly uncomfortable to have to explain every time that a friends and family round is not really an option for everyone...
Pop me your pitch deck as this post is everything! ??

8 个月Your experiences and many more highlight the profound inequities within the startup ecosystem. The lack of a traditional support network, whether familial, educational, or professional, is a stark reminder that the entrepreneurial playing field is far from level. And I couldn't help smiling at Jessica Jackson's comment
