Michael Anderson, AIA-NOMA walks the walk n talks the talk while also manning a solid architectural practice. The entrepreneurs road is NOT for the faint of heart. What can we collectively or individually do to assist these businesses that are the catalyst for job creation? Pay on time! Cut out the red tape that slows the flow! Stop misinformation from flowing; be transparent about process! Allocate funds based on needs not cookie cutter processes that are antiquated! Hold the bigger pockets feet to the fire as you do entrepreneurs…yeah, I can go on n on cause I’m at the table. I see unnecessary duress because the order takers are not decision makers or influencers so progress is impeded. Introducing ‘The Spirit of the Place’… ? Roughly translated from the architectural concept of the “Genius Loci,” the Spirit of the Place is where architecture looks not only at a building itself, but at how buildings can preserve and celebrate the culture, history and spirit of our towns and cities. ? But how can we balance preserving the past with building for the future? ? To answer this question, we collaborated with leading architects to explore how we can embrace innovative and sustainable solutions whilst also celebrating a place’s Genius Loci. Over the coming weeks we’ll be rolling out findings and content developed in partnership with renowned architecture firms: Bond Bryan, Morris+Company, Chapman Taylor, OPEN (part of SLR), Weston Williamson + Partners, AFL Architects, Levitt Bernstein and Buttress. ? Alastair Swayn AO, knew the quality of the built environment was critical to influencing people’s values and behaviour. Supporting a competition that invites students in the various design disciplines and the arts to consider issues pertaining to a contemporary urban design project is important to expanding on Alastair’s legacy. This is because the competition fosters experimentation but more significantly challenges students to address how their work will affect community identity and expectations. How does it respond to people and place to bring ‘light, colour and humanity’? Open to students in the second year (or equivalent) of their studies in the School of Design and the Built Environment, University of Canberra and any student enrolled in the School of Art and Design, The Australian National University, the calibre of entries was impressive. Winning entries were exhibited at an award event in late 2023. I have researched and written an article on Medium about 'Burning Man: Arts, Architecture & Urban Planning' from an architectural designer's point of view. Burning Man, an annual event held in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, stands at the intersection of arts, architecture, and urban planning, creating a unique and ephemeral cityscape known as Black Rock City.
