Singaporean flexitarians | Seeking to reduce meat intake Amid rising anxiety over the environmental and health impacts of meat production, a growing wave of consumers is embracing a ‘flexitarian’ diet—a middle ground that scales back but doesn't entirely cut out meat consumption. While campaigns like ‘Meat-Free Mondays’ have gained traction, the deeper drivers behind this dietary shift remain elusive. “Flexitarians are often seen as one homogenous group of consumers, hence we sought to identify subgroups of flexitarian consumers with different underlying psychological traits or motivations,” said Amanda Lim, a Senior Research Officer at A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (SIFBI). Lim worked alongside Florence Sheen and Ciarán Forde, formerly of SIFBI’s Clinical Nutrition Research Centre, to survey 650 Singaporean flexitarians and delve deeper into their attitudes towards reducing meat consumption..... https://bit.ly/4g1Jqee #SIBFI Singapore Institute of Food & Biotechnology Innovation A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research #Singapore #Research #Flexitarians #AlternateDiet #SoutheastAsia

On January 25, 2024, the 47th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University (INMU), INMU hosted the 3rd Professor Aree Valyasevi Memorial Lecture. This lecture series commemorates the legacy of INMU’s Founding Director, Professor Aree Valyasevi, whose internationally-recognized career in research and advocacy served as a cornerstone of Thailand's integrated community-based nutrition programs that led to dramatic reductions in malnutrition and propelled Thailand's economic and social development since the 1980s. The lecture was presented virtually by Dr. Jessica Fanzo, Professor of Climate and Director of the Food For Humanity Initiative at the Columbia Climate School, and was entitled “Ensuring Access to Healthy Diets from Sustainable Food Systems for Everyone: Exploring The Realities, Trade-Offs, And Hopes Amid A Changing World And Climate”. Professor Fanzo discussed recent research on global food systems and security in the context of ever increasingly complex planetary and political threats and opportunities, and how this research informs global thinking, governance, and strategies toward enabling healthy and sustainable diets and nutrition for the future of humanity. Professor Fanzo also discussed findings of a landmark report on food systems monitoring and transformation, published last December, that she co-led as part of the Food Systems Countdown Initiative (https://lnkd.in/d7kxTG7F). The lecture was attended by 160 participants from around the world. Morning Knowledge Shot ???? New research highlights decrease in health benefits of EVOO during storage! A study carried out by colleagues from the Analytical Chemistry Department at the Universidad de Córdoba has shed light on the degradation of health benefits in extra virgin olive oil (#EVOO) during storage. ?? The study analyzed 160 EVOO samples stored in darkness at 20°C for 12 months. Results revealed a 42.0 ± 24.3% decrease in phenolic content after this period, crucial for the oil's #healthbenefits. ?? Key Findings 1. The reduction in phenolic content is significantly influenced by the initial composition of the oil. EVOOs rich in oleacein and oleocanthal showed a more pronounced decrease. 2. The total #phenoliccompounds concentration experienced a substantial decline, aligning with previous studies showing a 40-70% reduction over similar periods. 3. Increase in Hydroxytyrosol and Oleocanthalic Acid, these compounds increased significantly in aged EVOOs, suggesting they can serve as markers for detecting the ageing process of the oil. 4. The health index, based on phenolic content, decreased notably. Before storage, 83.2% of samples exceeded the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) health claim threshold; after 12 months, this dropped to to 67.2%. This research emphasizes the importance of considering storage conditions and duration when evaluating the #health benefits of EVOO. It also provides valuable markers for identifying and classifying aged oils. I'm excited to share this publication news with you: How do regional and demographic differences in diets affect the health and environmental impact in China? This research is part of my PhD project and is a follow-up to our previously published study on the impact of urbanization development on sustainable diets in China (https://lnkd.in/eiB8PY-M). In this study, we delve into the trade-offs and synergies between dietary quality and environmental impacts across different regions of China. We found that diets with higher Chinese Healthy Eating Index scores are associated with higher diet-related environmental impacts among Chinese adults but this varies per region. We call for the development of sustainable diet strategies that need to account for potential trade-off between the health and environmental goals, and dietary habits of consumers in different regions and subpopulations. Find out more information about this paper in Food Policy https://lnkd.in/eciNfEbS. Many thanks to my supervisors Sander Biesbroek, Shenggen Fan, Pieter van 't Veer, Xin Wen, and Elise Talsma for their fruitful feedback and active support. Wageningen Human Nutrition and Health
