Layoffs are never fun and unfortunately necessary with the ebbs and flows of the market they deal in. For those affected, they are shocking news that can rock their world in many ways. A message like this from the CEO doesn’t change a ton at the end of the day for those being let go but it does a few things:
1) Extreme ownership - many talk the talk, few walk the walk. When a ship goes down, the person who owns the fault is the admiral, not the crewman who might have left a porthole open. It is expected that the CEO in this case takes ownership of the crap situation, actually address those who are being let go instead of hiding behind useless empty messages from HR.
2) Compensation - even in a hot market, not all employees will just easily hop over to the next job and continue life as planned. The severance package offered here is more than fair but what truly caught my eye was the thought put behind the assistance with the visa situation for those who need it. We’ve all seen colleagues go through issues with visas even in normal situations but when being let go immediately, few companies think to cover this aspect for those left in the lurch.
3) Accountability - publicly acknowledging what happened is a step rarely seen, as most CEOs would rather move on from this as quickly as most people would drive away from just running over a squirrel; no harm done to the car, drive on. No, the CEOs of FAANG wouldn’t do this every 12-18 months but in this case, especially in web3 where the ecosystem is vast and yet small, it speaks volumes that this CEO took this step.
For those of you in leadership positions, consider this next time you’re planning your mass layoffs. I personally don’t know the team at Matter Labs but I know for damn sure that I wouldn’t mind working for such a team.
Alex Gluchowski, Co-Founder and CEO of Matter Labs shared this message with the team yesterday.
