How has another year flown by? It feels like we just wrapped up last year’s NRC. This year brought yet another unforgettable NRC show—held, as always, in a breathtaking location that leaves us in awe. The timing of this show too, right at the turn of the new year, gives us pause, forcing us to reflect on how fortunate we are to be part of an industry that feels more like family and less like work. Until 2026, here’s to the connections, the moments, and the community that make this show—and this industry—so extraordinary, year after year. Today Konrad Wilkens F-Brown presented some of our current research on fire retarded wood at Nederlands Instituut Publieke Veiligheid (NIPV), as part of the Exchange of experts initiative, along with our friends from FRISSBE, Grunde Jomaas and Andrea Lucherini, Hanne K. from DEMA, and others. Lots of interesting presentations and discussions, and more tomorrow!

While I love the idea of a modern Century Series, the critical paragraph in this outstanding article is this: “USAF’s two-decades-long procurement holiday means the service must modernize its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance fleet, tanker fleet, trainer fleet, and command and control fleet at the same time as it updates fighters, bombers, and ICBMs. The only solution is more funding, David A. Deptula argued.” Even with Iraq and Afghanistan, how did we blow this so badly? Especially with all of the smart folks in Washington, D.C.? And how much money that has been wasted in Ukraine could have been better applied to NGAD and related projects? We did this to ourselves.

Do you know your audience?? This is one of the first rules of public speaking. During a crisis, the same thing applies in knowing who your audience is in order to reach them with your emergency messaging. Carina M., CERT Program Coordinator and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator with City of Oceanside, Calif., Fire Department, speaks about the importance of reaching the Hispanic community. What are the demographics of your community??From varying languages, cultural issues, religion, race, age, education, tourist community, retirement community…all the things that make your community unique. You have a good message, but how do you reach your public during a disaster or emergency? This is one of the lessons we stress during the “Public Information in an All-Hazards Incident” (MGT318 course) with Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service - TEEX. Carina was one of the class participants during the recent two-day training at NAF El Centro, Calif., from Nov. 20-21. Thanks to our incredible host, Kristopher Haugh, retired Navy.
