The UK Agri-Tech Centre team are carrying out a series of trials in our Vertical Farming Development Centre over this year in collaboration with GyroPlant The project, funded by Innovate UK and BBSRC?as part of the 2023 Novel low-emission food production systems funding competition, explores Gyroplant's innovative GyroCups within CEA production systems In the first trial we're investigating different substrates within the GyroCup to cultivate lettuce and kale using three different hydroponic regimes: ??Ebb & flood ??NFT ??Shallow water We've had some great results so far and are optimising protocols for using GyroCups within NFT systems Gyroplant's goal is to integrate GyroCup technology into large-scale NFT systems, thereby eliminating the need for traditional substrates like coir and mineral wool and even substrates altogether with GyroSnaps! In Emmeloord the Koppert and Nemacontrol teams are taking stock of the growing season. The Noordoostpolder is a region in the Netherlands known for the intensive cultivation of onions, which, as a natural consequence, means that the onion and bean seed fly pose significant challenges for growers. Thanks to the use of beneficial nematodes, however, many growers look back on a successful harvest and forward to a future where these pests are well-controlled. All else being equal, consistent microclimates = consistent yields. Air condition and canopy environment is so much more challenging to control than water and nutrients and is the foundation of consistent #CEA production. We've seen it over and over with our microclimate mapping systems. #Greenhouses typically have a 20°F+ temperature gradient from wet wall to exhaust fan, indoor grows typically have a 10°F+ temperature gradient across the rooms. If you didn't already know, your plants aren't experiencing what your control system is telling you.
