This week I was invited by Eva Rothgang to speak at OTH Amberg-Weiden to a group of PhD students about my own PhD-journey. I have never told the story in whole before. ???? It was a very exciting moment for me to reflect my PhD years in whole. The ups and downs. The inevitable moment of deep doubt if I would be able to finish the project. The moment of relieve passing the doctoral viva (Rigorosum) with top grade. I realized how much this bumpy road has thought me. Of course there is a huge amount of academic knowledge. ??There are equally many lessons on life. ???? How to handle insecurity. How to handle pressure. How to handle feedback and contradictory opinions from others. How to manage work, writing the PhD thesis, family, rest, relationships, self doubt and self growth all at once. ??It thought me that not giving up is hard but worth it. It thought me that being consistent is the the key to success. It thought me that learning never ends. It thought me that the most important thing in life are the people around you, who support you. Writing a PhD thesis are years and years of work, sacrifice, growth, discovery, learning, anxiety and joy. It is an enormous project and it helps you become a more resilient, self-conscious and confident person. ??♀? It still helps me every day to do my job, to understand the situativity of life, to reflect, that everyone has their own challenges in life (no matter how privileged they may or may not sound). Always be kind! Thank you so much at Eva for giving me the space to reflect on all this. And thank you for everyone listening and for the very kind responses to my story ?? #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #Belonging #PhD #lessonslearned

??CELEBRATING AANHPI MONTH!! ?? My academic journey, from a bachelor's degree to a doctorate, went beyond mere scholarly achievement; it was a profound affirmation of my capabilities, character, and intrinsic worth. As a woman of color, my path was fraught with both academic hurdles and systemic biases aimed at belittling or disregarding my achievements. Each degree obtained represented not just a personal triumph but also a testament to the resilience, determination, and unwavering dedication required to overcome the adversity often cast over the aspirations of minorities in academia. The attainment of academic accolades did not just expand my knowledge and skills; it significantly altered the perception and appreciation of my contributions. Adding titles before my name didn't just amplify the impact of my voice; it commanded respect, credibility, and authority that once felt elusive and previously absent. This shift was crucial in an environment where the contributions of people of color are regularly minimized or overlooked, underscoring a complex truth: academic success can serve as a lever to magnify voices that systemic biases seek to silence. This transformation empowered me to leverage my voice as a potent instrument for impact and change, offering a platform to address and challenge systemic injustices and vigorously advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings and beyond. My academic journey thus morphed into a wider mission—not solely for personal accolades but to uplift and inspire future generations. It underscored that dismantling barriers is a collective responsibility, a pledge to make the paths we carve broader and smoother for those coming after us. Our successes are not just for individual acknowledgment but are pivotal in creating avenues for succeeding generations. Comment below on how you're celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month!?? #AANHPI #indigenousscholar #AcademicSuccess #firstgen

We're thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of our 2024 Women and Girls in Science Mentorship Programme! This year's programme centred around the question, "How can women in science contribute more to sustainability in my region?" - inspired by the UN's Women and Girls in Science Assembly topic, Women in Science Leadership: A New Era for Sustainability. The programme included many career-developing activities such as creating a career map, a presentation by guest speaker and accomplished Glencore leader, Virginia Lawson, CV development, networking, and personal development advice on topics like how to bounce back from rejection. This incredible initiative has empowered young women to pursue their passions in STEM. Congratulations to this year's participants: Rabelani Nemakanga, Theodrine Reholile Ngaka, Bertha Naingwa, Laura Hederich Peláez and Tovhowani Ndou. We’re excited to see what the future holds for them! This year’s success could not have been achieved without the incredible dedication of our volunteer mentors who generously shared their time and expertise with their mentees. Thank you, Aline Bordin, Brad Barter, Julian David Feria Mosquera, Scott Martin and Jessica van Sliedregt, for contributing to this program. We're grateful for the knowledge and experience you have imparted. Together, we're proud to inspire the next generation of metallurgists and engineers. ???? ???? ???? #WomenAndGirlsInScience #WomenInSTEM #Mentorship #GlencoreTechnology

This International Day of Women in Mining, we celebrate the incredible achievements of women in our industry, led by our visionary CEO, Nombasa Tsengwa (Ph.D.) We boast a strong 31.2% female workforce, steadily growing from 29% in 2022. Women are driving innovation across all aspects of mining, from engineering and geology to safety and sustainability. We remain steadfast in empowering future leaders: a remarkable 61% of our Professionals in Training (PIT) graduates are female (up from 50% in 2022). We also champion diversity in STEM fields, with 61% of our full-time engineering and mining bursars being black women. Investing in the future is a priority for us, which is why we foster inclusivity with 55% female participation in our learnership and internship programs. Additionally, we sponsor black women in technical colleges (TVET) for specialised training. Join us in celebrating these achievements and building a more inclusive future! Together, we're mining for a brighter tomorrow. #InternationalDayofWomeninMining #PoweringPossibility

One day I think I’m going to make a documentary of some of the dialogues I have with young aspiring scientists and microscopists! It’s always awe-inspiring to me how simply showing up and being my authentic self can inspire others. ? I had the pleasure of meeting this amazing Filipino-British scientist during my travels to the UK and he sat next to me and asked, “Would you mind telling me your story?”. I guess I looked at him a bit puzzled at first because he quickly followed up with “… you were the only one in the room that looked like you, but you delivered such a dynamic presentation. How do you overcome the obstacles of being the only one in the room? I’ve never met anyone who could relate to me in that sense.” …. Let’s just say after sharing “my story” and sharing a tear or two from being honest and open about our humble beginnings and backgrounds, we both needed the representation we needed to see and dialogue we needed to hear as minority early career scientists ?? ? #alwaysbeyourauthenticself #youneverknowwhoswatching #mentorshipmatters #bethechangeyouwishtosee #diversityequityinclusionbelonging #underrepresentedgroups #minoritymentalhealth #MinorityInSTEM #thisiswhatascientistlookslike #embracediversity #internationalscience #sciencecollaboration #internationalscience #internationalspeaker #embracediversity ????

The National Communication Association just announced that I have been selected as a "Distinguished Scholar" for my lifetime contributions to the discipline of communication!! "The awards are for a distinguished “career,” operationally defined as a person who has at least 20 complete years of scholarly contributions since their Ph.D. was awarded. This keeps the membership limited to scholars showing a long-term commitment but does not limit the awardees to those of a particular age. These awards should, however, be considered "select"—only the people who we would present to others to showcase our profession. Breadth in the selection process should be considered, but it should not in any way override the quality considerations." This is the highest honor within my discipline. To be one of the VERY few women, faculty of color, and immigrant scholars to receive this prestigious award speaks to the continued need to work collectively to create more inclusive spaces in academia. I am feeling extremely grateful to my family, students, collaborators, mentors, well-wishers, and fellow scholar-activists. Without you all such recognition is not just impossible but is also meaningless. #NCA #DistinguishedScholar #LifetimeContribution #Research #CommSoWhite #Award #Scholarship #MediaStudies #Communication

#EnGen'ers in action at AISES! AISES is a national, nonprofit organization focused on substantially increasing the representation of?American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, First Nations and other Indigenous?peoples of North America in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies and careers. The Energy Leadership Institute Board Member Meg Nyberg joined current #EnGen members Hehewutei Amakali and Shaun T. at this impactful, yearly event. AISES?was founded in 1977 by American Indian scientists, engineers, and educators. In view of the high dropout rates and low college enrollment and graduation rates of American Indians compared with all other ethnic groups in the United States, and the severe underrepresentation of American Indians in the science and engineering fields, Native professionals resolved to create an organization that would identify and remove the barriers to academic success for Native students. Both AISES and ELI believe in the transformative power of education, mentorship, and leadership. By nurturing talent and supporting the academic and professional journeys of individuals from underrepresented communities, these organizations are paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future in STEM and energy. #STEM #AISES #EnergyLeadership #DiversityInSTEM #InclusiveWorkforce #IndigenousLeadership #CleanEnergyFuture #EnGen
