A good and sobering paper worth a read: https://lnkd.in/gy2C_e_C “The UN emerged from prevailing ideas at the time of its founding, including that endless economic growth brings prosperity and wellbeing, that human ingenuity can overcome all constraints to growth, and that nature and nonhumans exist as ‘resources’ to serve us. While these ideas have directly led to the present-day cascading crises, the UN appears invested in their obsolete framing even as circumstances are becoming more desperate. Since the mid-twentieth century, the expansion of the human enterprise has accelerated on a number of interconnected levels: growth of economic extraction, production and trade; increased consumption and higher standards of living (for some); increasing energy use; a growing global consumer population; enormous growth of the food sector; relentless technological (including infrastructural) sprawl; and exponential increase of the human population and the global livestock population. The combined latter populations now comprise 96 per cent of mammalian biomass. Meanwhile, a 2020 Science publication offered a sobering quantifi cation of technospheric growth. While 120 years ago the mass of the echnosphere (the total amount of man-made stuff) was three per cent of Earth’s biomass, by 2020 the technosphere exceeded the weight of all living beings. By 2040, the mass of human stuff is projected to grow to three times the planet’s biomass. Briefly put, the industrial technosphere, serving eight billion people connected within a global capitalist system, is overtaking the planet. What we have learned is that this explosion of growth, at breakneck speed, is a recipe for climate breakdown, mass extinction and global toxification, destabilising all complex life and undermining humanity’s prospects for high-quality living and even for survival.”

Professor Roberta Ryan joined the second session in the Australian European Union Green Hydrogen Dialogue. The discussion was focused on how regional communities can be effectively engaged in large-scale new energy projects to cultivate social license, understanding and acceptance. ? Professor Ryan shared some key findings from the Institute’s second Regions Matter survey of 3,000+ people, conducted from December 2023 to January 2024. The findings highlight community attitudes to climate change and net zero initiatives including: - 69% of respondents agreed with the statement ‘climate change is having a real impact’ – only 13% either disagreed or strongly disagreed. This has remained steady since the first iteration of Regions Matter completed in 2021 (69%). - The Hunter region overall has higher support for net-zero emission targets (45%) than non-Hunter regions (41%), but there is a sharp divide between the Upper (with 34% support for net zero) and Lower Hunter (49% support for net zero).?? - We asked if people were prepared to change how they do things if it benefited the environment, and there was generally a high level of support – 65% of people were prepared to make personal change in the interest of the environment. Agreement with this statement was consistently high across most demographics, but notably higher in the Upper and Lower Hunter. ? According to Professor Ryan, authentic community engagement with communities experiencing transition is hinged on education, communication and coordination. These principles are essential to ensuring that no one is left behind on the road to a new energy future. ? Findings from our Regions Matter research will be released throughout 2024. FNPA is pleased to share this video highlighting the growing need for affordable and reliable energy for Indigenous communities. The video project was completed in partnership with Energy for a Secure Future to highlight the energy-based challenges faced in Indigenous communities. Hear from Chief Mark Fox of Piapot First Nation, Chief Edwin Ananas of Beardy's and Okemasis Cree Nation and Chief Christine Longjohn of Sturgeon Lake First Nation. These leaders talk about "heat poverty" and the challenges their communities face when it comes to expensive, unreliable energy. Watch the video here to learn about these leaders' potential solutions. #FNPA #FirstNations #Indigenous #Inuit #CleanTech #EnergySecurity

Secure land rights are foundational for human prosperity. They break cycles of poverty, improve food security and nutrition, increase livelihoods and agricultural productivity, and contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. Yet nearly one billion people worldwide experience land tenure insecurity, meaning they find it likely that they will be evicted from their land within the next five years. Cadasta is a leading global social sector organization dedicated to providing land technology, training, and technical services to communities and governments so that they can affordably and easily document, map, secure, and sustain inclusive land and resource rights at scale for a more sustainable and equitable planet. #landrights #tenuresecurity #land4climate? In many parts of the world, there exists a troubling correlation between the extractive industry and various forms of violence against women, children, villages, and tribal communities. This correlation suggests that regions heavily reliant on extractive industries such as mining, logging, or oil drilling often experience heightened rates of violence and exploitation. This violence can manifest in different ways, including environmental degradation leading to health issues, displacement of indigenous peoples from their land, increased crime rates, and the proliferation of human trafficking and sexual violence. The extractive industry's presence often exacerbates existing social inequalities and power imbalances, leaving vulnerable populations particularly susceptible to exploitation and harm. Addressing this correlation requires comprehensive approaches that prioritize community empowerment, environmental justice, and the protection of human rights. In addition to the correlation between the extractive industry and violence against women, children, villages, and tribal communities, there's a notable increase in male presence in small rural areas or towns where these industries operate. This influx often transforms these areas into modern-day boomtowns, disrupting the traditional way of life for indigenous populations. Some rural indigenous communities, already lacking in funds and resources, struggle to cope with the resulting social and environmental challenges. The environmental damage caused by extractive activities further compounds the difficulties faced by these communities, exacerbating issues of health, displacement, and cultural preservation. Environmental justice and climate change efforts must encompass the harms inflicted upon humanity and the Earth by the extractive industry. Additionally, embracing a just transition not only addresses our climate crisis but also serves as a dual mission by mitigating environmental damage and promoting social equity and can ultimately end violence against Indigenous people in these regions.
