Language matters! A couple of concerns related to this job posting for an Educational Assistant in Maryland. 1) The only circumstances under which a child could be restrained, according to Maryland law (this is a Maryland school), is in a crisis that involves imminent threat of serious physical harm. This is legally defined and is essentially a potentially life-threatening situation. No one should restrain a student to manage their behavior. 2) Words matter! Functional labels are problematic on many fronts. Functional labels can be stigmatizing and can lead to stereotypes related to intellectual ability. Functional labels often lead to inappropriate expectations and school placements. While we are at it, let's not use the term non-verbal, it is problematic for similar reasons. https://aasr.news/ynq #endseclusion

Last week, I discussed how even first graders have free speech rights – and why that’s important. ? But student rights are not unlimited; they are balanced by the need of school educators to ensure a safe environment on campus. ? The line is not always clear, and the devil is in the details. For instance, what does a “safe environment” really mean? Does it deal exclusively with the physical safety of students, or also their emotional and psychological safety? And how are we defining those terms? ? Ultimately, it is the role of the Courts decide whether student speech crosses a line from protected to unprotected – and therefore, whether discipline imposed by schools was constitutional. I discuss these issues for the Daily Journal: https://lnkd.in/gdNvM76d

“[Academic probation] happens to a lot of people. We all struggle sometimes. Reach out.” As California Competes Senior Researcher Laura Bernhard, PhD demonstrated, academic probation notices should normalize the experience and connect students to comprehensive support. She and CEO Su Jin Jez recently shared insights with EdSource on removing the barriers current academic probation policies place in the way of students’ path to success. ??Read the article: https://lnkd.in/gFWCkyaS ??Read the policy analysis: https://lnkd.in/grHvWXmp

Most of our colleges and universities have given raving "diversity" staffers and faculty free rein to push their divisive ideology on everyone else. At one university, a white English professor couldn't take the hostility and longer and sued, arguing that the school has created a hostile work environment in violation of federal law. I write about the case in my latest Martin Center article. https://lnkd.in/eqTjVc4y
