A COMPASSIONATE ECONOMY IS IT POSSIBLE? Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending a thought-provoking discussion that challenged conventional business models. Melanie Rieback and Alison Holloway explained how their company business models work with an approach that challenges the traditional drive to extract wealth from production, offering instead a more balanced, equitable, environmentally sound and compassionate way of doing business. ??♀? What is it about this model that is compassionate ? It's a business model that prioritises people, the environment and society over profits, enabling everyone involved - employees, owners, customers, the business and even the economy to thrive without causing the harm of traditional business models. ? Staff and owners alike earn a fair and livable wage,?but no one becomes 'unnaturally wealthy', as Melanie puts it. At the same time, staff don't get terminated for a sniff of a slight boost to the company's profit. ? Customers are charged market rates, with provisions to subsidise those who need the service but can't afford to pay as much. ? ? ?No shareholder's interest in extracting wealth from the business is prioritised above all else. Measures are put in place to stop this eventuality from arising.? ?????? ?? If you find this business model as intriguing as me, I highly recommend watching Melanie's TED talk. Thanks to PASA for inviting me. Thanks to Jane for seamlessly Chairing the session, and to Anna Taylor and Lorraine Harper for sharing their insights with me. Thinking about the two areas of focus I mentioned: Technical Debt - the debt we have built up over decades of underinvesting in administration technology. Talent Debt - the experienced first wave of administrators have retired, professional trustees and consultants are hoovering talent and firms have underinvested in training and development programs (primarily through COVID worries). We need to invest in talent and create pathways for administration to be a vibrant long term career again. Debt has to be paid, and the only way to balance this equation is to stop thinking of this as a sunset industry and invest with longer term aspirations. There will always be benefit provision, the assets and liabilities do not disappear. That will be serviced in different ways but skills are transferable and new markets present. We will always have retirement savers, from my perspective, and we can flex with their needs. So, in short in my 42 years every sunset has been followed by a sunrise (I have not been to Norway in fairness). If that doesn’t happen, pensions are the least of our worries!! (See ESG policies)

I am not sure if I am as mature as eBPF, but I am sure that eBPF talks are always needed! ?? On a side note, Federico's talk is very well-structured and easy to follow, making it highly recommended for anyone who is just beginning to work with eBPF (because it can get messy, trust me) ??
