{WEBINAR} Sustainable Water Management Practices for LAs by ACO Australia Join us for this national webinar on sustainable water management practices for landscape architects presented by ACO. This webinar will feature a case study of a project on the NSW Central Coast presented by Mark Liebman, Director of Sustainability Workshop. ? Wednesday 10 April ? 12pm-1pm AEST ? Free for AILA members ? 2 CPD points Deciding how stormwater is managed can have lasting effects on a project’s success. Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) aims to improve the ability of urban environments to capture, treat and reuse stormwater before it has the chance to overburden existing systems and pollute and degrade our creeks and rivers. Treating stormwater ‘at the source’ is a fundamental necessity for protecting our water supply, preserving natural ecosystems and replenishing the natural water table. By removing contaminants and pollutants at the point where water is collected, we can minimise the release of harmful pollutants into the environment. To achieve this, underground temporary stormwater storage has become vital to consider not only for stormwater detention (OSDs) but increasingly for stormwater reuse (retention) and infiltration. Today we not only celebrate the beauty of our planet, but also the commitment to sustainability that we've made in our LEED Gold community, Northfield. Here are just a few ways we are making a positive impact every day: ?? Energy-efficient bulbs and fixtures can use 50%-75% less energy, and can emit the same amount of light. ?? Well-designed heating, cooling, and ventilation systems provide for 30% in energy savings in most LEED-certified homes. ?? Smart landscaping reduces the amount of water that is needed to keep a yard looking attractive. Every LEED-certified home is require to incorporate good landscaping practices during construction, such as conserving topsoil, controlling erosion, and not planting invasive species. By incorporating sustainable materials, energy-efficient technologies, and mindful design, we can create spaces that not only nurture families, but also protect our planet. Stormwater management is a highly important aspect of modern landscape design. It may sound a little boring on paper, but through green infrastructure and best management practices one can improve both the aesthetic and ecological quality of their local environment. Green infrastructure is the practice of using natural processes (through native plants / restored ecosystems) to store, filter, and protect against stormwater. In doing so, we can reduce nonpoint source pollution in our waterways, improve water quality, and create aesthetically pleasing habitat that can be better utilized by wildlife. Simple turf grasses can protect against basic soil erosion, but rarely contribute to a self sustaining, developed ecosystem. ?? Paving the Way to a Sustainable Future: The Impact of Permeable Paving ?? As cities worldwide face increasing challenges related to stormwater management and urban heat islands, permeable paving emerges as a pivotal solution. Here's how this innovative technology is poised to shape the future of urban infrastructure: Enhanced Stormwater Management: Permeable paving allows rainwater to infiltrate through the surface, significantly reducing runoff and alleviating the burden on drainage systems. This helps mitigate flooding and reduces the risk of water pollution. ????? Groundwater Recharge: By facilitating the natural replenishment of groundwater, permeable paving supports sustainable water management practices and enhances local water supplies. ???? Environmental Benefits: With its ability to reduce surface temperatures, permeable paving contributes to the mitigation of the urban heat island effect, promoting healthier and more comfortable urban environments. ????? Long-Term Durability: High-quality permeable paving options, such as PurePave, offer exceptional strength and longevity, often outperforming traditional materials with a lifespan of up to 40 years. ???? Aesthetic Flexibility: Available in a range of colors and designs, permeable paving not only enhances functionality but also provides aesthetic versatility, allowing for tailored solutions that blend seamlessly into various architectural styles. ????? Embracing permeable paving is not just a step towards advanced urban planning but a commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. As we look to the future, the integration of such innovative solutions will be critical in creating resilient, green cities. #UrbanSustainability #PermeablePaving #FutureOfInfrastructure #GreenCities #EnvironmentalInnovation #SustainableDevelopment #PurePave

Understanding Green Infrastructure: What Is It and Why Does It Matter? Green infrastructure refers to an interconnected network of natural and semi-natural features that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits. It encompasses a variety of elements, including parks, green roofs, urban forests, rain gardens, and permeable pavements. Unlike traditional gray infrastructure, which relies heavily on concrete and metal, green infrastructure integrates nature into urban environments, enhancing their resilience and sustainability. So, why is green infrastructure important? First, it helps manage stormwater by absorbing rain and reducing runoff, thereby mitigating flooding and improving water quality. Additionally, it enhances urban biodiversity by providing habitats for various species. Green spaces also offer recreational areas for communities, promoting mental well-being and physical health. Implementing green infrastructure can be achieved through various methods, such as retrofitting existing urban areas with green roofs or creating new parks in vacant lots. Collaboration between city planners, landscape architects, and the community is crucial to ensure these initiatives meet local needs. At our self-sustainable city project, we’re dedicated to incorporating green infrastructure in innovative ways to create a healthier and more sustainable living environment. What Are Green Roofing Materials? Green roofing materials refer to a variety of sustainable and eco-friendly options used in the construction and installation of green roofs. These roofs are designed to support vegetation and promote environmental benefits, including improved air quality, energy efficiency, and stormwater management. By using materials that are renewable and recyclable, green roofing not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of buildings but also contributes to biodiversity. Which Materials Are Commonly Used? Some popular green roofing materials include: 1. Vegetation: Various types of grasses, succulents, and native plants are often used, chosen for their resilience and low maintenance needs. ?? 2. Growing Medium: Lightweight soil mixes provide the necessary nutrients for plant growth while minimizing weight on the building structure. 3. Water Retention Mats: These materials help to hold moisture, ensuring plants receive adequate water while reducing runoff. 4. Root Barriers: To prevent plant roots from damaging the roof structure, root barrier materials are essential in green roof designs. 5. Drainage Layers: Proper drainage is crucial to prevent water pooling, and these materials help manage excess water. How to Choose Green Roofing Materials? When selecting materials, consider the local climate, building structure, and desired plant species. It’s essential to opt for materials that align with sustainability goals while ensuring longevity and performance. By embracing green roofing materials, you can significantly reduce your environmental footprint while enhancing the beauty of urban spaces.
