In rural communities, community health and economic development depend on one another to thrive. However, current systems do not make collaboration between these fields easy. Despite working toward similar goals of community betterment, the fields are generally siloed, resulting in opportunities for alignment being overlooked.?The Aspen Institute addresses this challenge in a remarkable report that highlights three principles: recognizing common goals, aligning systems, and sharing resources to advance both rural health and development. This article resonates with us at AscendRural, as we are advocates for community collaboration. It’s our belief that technology integration will be critical in strengthening rural communities’ economy and well-being.? Proud to share an insightful op-ed authored by Aspen CSG's Co-Executive Directors, Bonita Robertson-Hardy and Chris Estes, published in Governing. We recently convened 29 practitioners, advocates, and innovators from rural and Indigenous communities to gather their insights. Local Partnerships have supported a variety of councils, and transformation projects through the Local Government Association's Sector Support Improvement programme funded by the UK government. Read our latest transformation case study here >>> Regeneration of Broadwater Farm https://lnkd.in/eUxDXHs8 Collaborating with Local Partnerships LLP, Haringey Council's Broadwater Farm regeneration project integrates health and well-being into physical improvements. Through a comprehensive review, gaps were identified, and recommendations made to prioritise health. A dataset tracking health indices will guide future interventions, fostering collaboration among the council and its partners. Moving forward, the council will implement recommendations and track progress using the dataset, recognising the importance of a holistic approach and localised data in addressing community needs. Rural communities are integral to the fabric of a nation's economy. Yet, many face persistent challenges, from underinvestment to depopulation, that limit their potential. Brookings’ recent insights emphasize the critical importance of inclusive development in these areas to foster equitable economic growth. Key strategies identified include: Investing in people and infrastructure: Prioritizing workforce development, education, and digital infrastructure can equip rural residents with the tools they need to thrive in a modern economy. This ensures that talent remains local, creating sustainable growth. Promoting entrepreneurship and innovation: Supporting local businesses, especially minority- and women-owned enterprises, brings new energy and economic diversity to rural communities. Entrepreneurs create jobs, stimulate innovation, and often reinvest in their own neighborhoods. Strengthening partnerships: Collaboration between local governments, private sectors, and civic organizations can pool resources and expertise, ensuring that rural areas receive the attention they deserve. This holistic approach enables communities to address economic, social, and environmental challenges collectively. Equitable access to resources: From financial capital to broadband, rural areas must have equal access to resources that urban centers enjoy. Expanding access to reliable internet, healthcare, and financing can narrow the development gap and support an inclusive economy. By fostering leadership and creating ecosystems where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, we can build stronger, more resilient rural towns. The future of inclusive rural development lies in empowering local communities and ensuring equitable access to the resources and tools they need to flourish.

Although I am currently not in a "designated" rural community, but 43% of our county is in rural areas, I find it important to keep focus on the importance of understanding nuances of rural health. I read an article today and it spoke about how "spatial stigmas" affect rural people and rural health, and how by addressing this it can improve our communities. "Rural places are frequently depicted as inferior and lacking compared to metropolitan or urban places—rural places are boring, dull, disadvantaged, and in decline. Rural places are also commonly portrayed as sites of poverty, where people with low levels of educational attainment reside, where there are fewer and poorer quality services, limited infrastructure, a lack of “culture” and opportunity, high degrees of conservatism and are considered a “burden” to the taxpayer." Rural place stigma plays a key role in maintaining and perpetuating the kinds of health inequalities experienced by those living in rural places.
