At the second plenary of our 2024 Annual Conference, two of our Native Youth Grantmakers joined philanthropic leaders for a collaborative dialogue that explored the benefits, challenges, and insights critical to creating intergenerational approaches in philanthropy. As McKaylin Peters (Menominee Nation) astutely shares, bringing Native youth into the sector not only encourages future philanthropic leaders, but also allows Native youth to bring their culture and identity to the table: “Once we have culture, we have our identity. The MacArthur Foundation today announced the third installment of its global?100&Change?competition. The Foundation is adding a requirement that applicants address how the project will advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. This criterion aligns with the Foundation’s?Just Imperative. According to its press release, "[t]he competition is unique because no field or problem area is designated, unlike most prizes and challenges, and proposals from all sectors and anywhere in the world are encouraged. To date,?100&Change?has leveraged an additional $511 million in funding, spurring the philanthropic sector to rethink its approach to achieving impact at scale." "In the?inaugural round of?100&Change, Sesame Workshop and International Rescue Committee?were awarded $100 million to educate young children displaced by conflict and persecution in the Syrian response region. . . . The role of African giving has largely been silent. However, a new paradigm is emerging—one where community-based organizations (CBOs) are reclaiming the narrative and driving change from within. Drawing on years of traditional giving, it is time we dispel the notions of African philanthropy as having been constrained or colonized.
