Thanks to the opportunity for Internationally Educated immigrant women professionals created by the Newcomer Women's Services Toronto through the pilot #policyFellowshipProgram, the participatory research highlighted the challenges faced by women refugees and immigrants in accessing the Canadian #LaborMarket. As we strive As we strive to meet the #Agenda2030 Sustainable Development Goals focused on the 3Ps—People, Planet, and Profit—we must examine the labor market through the lens of equity and ensure we #LeaveNoOneBehind. Racialized women everyday face the brunt of exclusion from the labor market despite their readiness to participate. Their participation is further thwarted by unequal pay based on gender and race. ?? This can change! ?? In Belgium, 14.6 % of non-EU immigrant women with higher education, are unemployed and looking for work, compared to just 1.9% of Belgian women. This disparity becomes even more pronounced when comparing non-EU immigrant women with lower education, where the unemployment rate rises to 17,6%. These statistics underscore the challenges and marginalization that migrant women face in the Belgian labour market. Many find themselves underemployed, working below their educational qualifications, while also dealing with the daily realities of racism, discrimination and sexism. ?As we celebrate International Women’s Day, the Displaced Talent for Europe (DT4E) team wants to take a moment to reflect on the untapped potential of labour market integration and labour mobility pathways for migrants and displaced women. We celebrate the resilience of migrant women, who often make important sacrifices in their journey towards better opportunities. ? ? Is the term, “minority owned businesses” outdated? According to the Pew Research Center: “By 2055, the United States will be a nation without a majority racial or ethnic group. The Hispanic and Asian populations will continue to grow more rapidly than whites and blacks. The white population, now 62% of the total, will decline to less than 50% sometime between 2050 and 2055.” “Minority Owned" is an outdated category to represent people of color businesses and/or women-owned businesses. Best practices should categorize specific race/ethnicity; e.g. Hispanic-Owned Businesses, Black-Owned Businesses, etc. And, include separate categories for Women/Female-Owned Businesses, LGBTQ-Owned, etc. Business owners who identify with other underrepresented groups and/or people of color should be reflected as so.
