Two days ago, I facilitated a storytelling session at an organization. Many participants relatively new to Canada, hardly understand or speak English. It was an interesting experience to lead and facilitate this session and find ways to engage and help them interact. However, I really enjoyed “dancing in the moment” - building the session one step at a time, based on whatever came up. After I asked what languages they speak, we found out they all speak several languages, and have one in common (other than English and French) - which I don’t know. :-) Two participants agreed to translate, which slowed down the session pace, but no one was in a hurry. After sharing the first story with translation, splitting into small groups and let them share theirs in the language of choice helped too. It was rewarding to notice at the end the impact of this storytelling session on them, and hear their take aways from this session. Many surprised themselves with their relaxed feelings at the end, feeling more confident about self-expression and recognizing a need to attend more sessions like these and reach out to others. I even got an evaluation form filled out in Arabic. :-) Chat GPT doesn’t help, recommending Google Lens to get the translation to English from the image containing the review. What surprised me was the long sentences used by the translator when mine were much shorter. Leaving me to wonder what participants understood from my story - “Seeds of Rebirth” (from IWA anthology “Reborn With Memories”) - which used many metaphors. Since I’ve facilitated several storytelling sessions like these lately, I came to have a bigger appreciation for the power of storytelling on both the person sharing and those listening. Now looking forward to the upcoming online sessions - January 16 and 30 - that will focus on storytelling for job search, as I’ll lead and facilitate both. The themes were requested by JVS Toronto. https://lu.ma/iwa These storytelling sessions are part of the “Sharing Stories” program of Immigrant Writers Association (IWA), funded by the Government of Canada. Did you take part in any storytelling session like this? Or led one? What was your experience?

What are the basic challenges you face after you land in Canada with PR? How can you train yourself to get a good job? I'll respond to these two inquiries using the feedback I received from clients who have immigrated to Canada. Finding a job in your field of study or experience is the most basic obstacle a PR could have. Despite having an MBA, one of my clients started out working in a store. Although it may sound strange but you should always be prepared. You must create a résumé that stands out. Additionally, you can seek assistance from a resume writer. Customize your LinkedIn profile as per requirement. Having references is kind of a must. Also, I'd like you to be prepared to spend a lot of time looking for a job because it won't come your way quickly. I hope this information helps. If you still have any questions book a session with me! Let's Emigrate #Canada #jobs #Linkedin

Recently I started reading post and blogs which incorporates strategies for immigrants. As an immigrant who is already on the job market for quite a while I want to share my thoughts with the people who are new in this field. Understanding the Canadian Job Market: You need to research industries and sectors aligning with their skills, experience, and qualifications, utilizing online resources and networking with professionals for insights. Tailoring Resume and Cover Letter: Adapting resumes and cover letters to Canadian standards by emphasizing relevant skills and accomplishments tailored to each job application. Remember one resume doesn't work for every jobs. Building a Professional Network: Actively networking through industry events, career fairs, and online platforms like LinkedIn to gain insights and increase chances of referrals and recommendations. Enhancing Language Skills: Improving proficiency in English or French through language classes or improvement programs. Researching Credential Recognition: Obtain necessary certifications or licenses from regulatory bodies or professional associations. Remaining Persistent and Resilient: Encouraging immigrants to stay persistent, resilient, and proactive in refining job search strategies, staying updated with industry trends, and continuously improving skills. In conclusion, while navigating the Canadian job market may present initial challenges for immigrants but be patient. patience is the key.

I was only 18 when I left my country of birth alone. My parents didn't have the $ to visit me. I didn't have the "experience" or support to go after many things in my life... At 18, I had 0 experience living in another country. ? But I managed to rent my own place At 26, I had 0 experience speaking in French ? But I passed my immigration test in French At 27, I had 0 experience working in Canada ? But I managed to secure my first job at a top consulting firm. At 34, I had 0 experience starting my own company ? But I managed to take it to 6-figures within 1 year At 40, I had 0 experience copywriting for others ? But I managed to write several LinkedIn Posts that generated $$$ for others. I achieved the hardest things in my life with 0 experience. This is why I say: Determining people's competency based on experience is the biggest mistake any organization will ever make... If you want to test for competency, ask these questions in an interview: 1. What's the hardest thing you've ever overcome? 2. How did you handle it? 3. What do you believe in? That's how you'll know the person you're hiring has the passion and grit to succeed in any role. Agree? (Repost for others ??) P.S. Do you believe in giving people a chance?

Moji picked up her Nigerian resume, made a few tweaks and started applying for new roles in Canada. Guess what she heard? Crickets! But it wasn't her fault; the Canadian job market is just built different. So, she booked a one-on-one session with us to find the clarity and support she needed to make the right choice. During our session, we worked closely with Moji to identify two promising career paths that aligned perfectly with her background and offered high earning potential. We didn't stop there; we conducted a comprehensive skill mapping to pinpoint her key competencies and technical skills. Together, we crafted a plan to acquire the additional skills she'd need to be a standout candidate in any job market. To ensure she hit the ground running, we quickly revamped her resume, focusing on the low-hanging fruit - one of the career paths where she could start applying immediately. The session was a strategic overhaul designed to showcase her strengths and bypass the common pitfalls that block many immigrants from getting interviews. By the end of the session, Moji had not only a clear job search strategy but also a path to two new careers, a revamped resume, and actionable interview tips. She was ready to take on her new journey with confidence and without starting from zero. Does Moji's story sound like your own? ??Are you struggling to find a career path that aligns with your background without having to start afresh? ??Do you need help identifying the core competencies and technical skills that will make you a top 1% candidate? ??Is your resume failing to get you interviews and need a revamp to beat the Applicant Tracking System and pass the 6-second rule? I have lived in Sweden for over 8 years and estimate that I've sent over 2000 CVs into the Swedish job market. Guess what happened? I learned A LOT! I studied all the advice out there on the internet, in books, from Arbetsf?rmedlingen, YouTube, Swedish blogs… you name it, I probably tried it. And what I discovered is that not all content is created equal. Some strategies worked, and some were just fluffy advice that took too long to get results. Some strategies were my own experiments that yielded interesting results. Therefore, when I started offering career coaching and CV review services I made a promise to myself and my clients that I would teach them all my best secrets and that their success was my first priority. I didn’t share the same, generic advice that they had probably already tried and didn’t work for them. I shared custom strategies for exactly where they were in their job search. I didn’t share how to structure their CV according to what an American job-searching influencer suggested - because trust me, as another American myself I tried all of their strategies and not all work in Sweden! Instead, I shared how they can adapt their own cultural style to the Swedish way. And I’m happy to see that my coaching clients are getting results! One particular client of mine was someone who spoke Swedish, didn’t need a visa sponsorship and was already an established professional in her home country. Logically, she should have had a job a lot sooner than she was experiencing. So we adjusted her CV to her current situation and career goals. We focused on using keywords, making her a specialist, and avoided getting interviews for generalized positions that she was overqualified for and instead focused on getting interviews for jobs she wanted. I’m happy to have received this update from her a week after our coaching session - already she got 2 interviews by adjusting her CV and making specific changes. If you’re using all the tools and knowledge you have to find a job in Sweden, and you know you are a good candidate but somehow still don’t have the job, reach out to me and we can schedule a session to get you results (and fast… because bills don’t wait!) ?? Ready to start now? Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gHZ8V4M7 I'm raising my coaching prices this Friday so make sure to lock in the current rates while they are still low! ?? Hi! I’m Amanda Herzog the founder of Intertalents In Sweden and consultant. I offer coaching services, online courses, lectures and other resources to help foreign-born professionals find career success in Sweden.?Follow me for more posts like this- #WorkInSweden #LifeInSweden #Sweden #MoveToSweden #CareerCoach
