Co-housing: An Opportunity for Sustainable Urban Development in Rural Areas?" I am delighted to share that I have recently presented the final results of my Master's thesis! After a year of research, my thesis showcases the potential of architecture to tackle sustainability challenges in rural and semi-rural areas. It underscores the necessity for innovative architectural practices and the crucial role of spatial design in developing sustainable communities. By exploring co-housing schemes, my research illustrates how strategic spatial design can enhance community cohesion while balancing communal living and individual privacy. The study addresses critical issues such as intergenerational social isolation, immigrant integration, and the creation of mixed neighborhoods, aligning with East Belgium's Vision 2040. Key findings reveal that co-housing can strengthen social bonds, reduce urban sprawl, and create vibrant community spaces, despite the complexities of achieving sustainability in rural areas. The methodology includes stakeholder interviews, a survey, and a workshop, with continuous feedback ensuring the practicality of the proposals. The thesis calls for further research to refine architectural methodologies and highlights the significant role of architecture in promoting sustainability and community life in rural areas. All this was achievable thanks to my promoters, Sergio Altomonte and Olivier Masson, who helped me throughout the process. As mentioned earlier, it was important to involve different stakeholders, which was only possible thanks to the cooperation and advice of the ?WOB GmbH, Gemeinde Kelmis and WFG Ostbelgien VoG - Wirtschafts- & Regionalf?rderung. Barcelona will host the Innovation District Immersion Program from July 8 to 12, an event promoted by our partner 22@Network Barcelona that will bring together urban planners, economists, architects, and institutional and governmental representatives to move towards smart, sustainable, and inclusive cities. ?? The program offers a packed agenda of activities, including lectures, workshops, tours, and networking, which will allow participants to discover the sustainable solutions implemented in Barcelona's 22@ district to reduce the carbon footprint and promote the use of renewable energies. From energy efficiency projects to smart resource management systems, the district is a model for other environmentally conscious cities to follow. ?? This event has been structured around the following axes: ? The social impact of innovation: different strategies to mitigate the negative effects of accelerated urban development will be explored. These sessions will focus on the need to move towards inclusive cities that offer opportunities for all citizens, ensuring that the benefits of technological progress are distributed equitably among all inhabitants. ? Knowledge transfer: The fundamental role of accelerators and incubators in fostering the creation of start-ups and promoting collaboration between companies, universities, and research centers will be analyzed. Speakers will give insights on how to drive innovation and economic development through knowledge. ? The success story of the urban planning model of the 22@ district: Experts from the Barcelona innovation district will explain the economic strategies that made possible the transformation of this industrial area into a center of innovation. Talks and workshops will provide an in-depth understanding of how these successes can be replicated in other cities. ? Networking opportunities: Attendees will have the chance to establish synergies with other professionals, share experiences, and explore new collaborations that transcend the event. One of the main pillars of the event is to foster a robust network of contacts to support the implementation of innovative projects in different regions. ?? ?? How do we engage the young people in the green transition? One way could be a hackathon like the one arranged at the Desire demonstration site BTC d.d. (BTC City Ljubljana in Slovenia). ?? As a part of the Desire an Irresistible Circular Society project, the younger generation is asked to develop ideas for shaping the green future of BTC City Ljubljana, one of Europe’s largest shopping, business, and leisure centres. Back in February, the Slovenia Desire partners, BTC d.d. and CER - Sustainable Business Network arranged a hackathon with Generation Z. For 30 hours the 30 participants from age 16 to age 35 worked on finding a new story for BTC City. ?? In the end, the six groups came up with such great ideas, that the jury had chosen two winners with completely different ideas. The ideas and solutions from the winning teams will be presented to BTC City Management, and then potentially integrated into BTC’s sustainable and green transformation strategy. “We hope that the green transformation activities, as well as works and efforts from the other seven Desire demonstration sites, will serve as an encouragement to others to join our movement, to make a more desirable future,” says Andrej Janko, Head of Sustainability, Development Department, BTC. The hackathon was a successful way to reach young people according to one of the young participants Anamarija C?den: “I really liked the creative challenges that they gave us, and also the fact that they are listening to young people, what they want out of the future, out of shared spaces. Curious to know more about the link between #placemaking and #regenerative principles? The Driving Urban Transitions Partnership just published the position paper “Towards Regenerative Neighbourhoods: European Cases, Insights, and Initiatives”, a curated compilation made by the Circular Urban Economies Transition Pathway. Chapter 6 of this publication features my contribution “Infrastructures in-between” focusing on how placemaking can support #circularbehavior with regenerative potential. This essay was developed under the #Inclusive #Neighbourhoods transition program of BUUR Part of Sweco and it is part of the ongoing research on #regenerativecities and #resilience by #UrbanInsight , Sweco knowledge platform. New Publication! ? ?? Urban ecosystems face unprecedented challenges. Waste is hard to assimilate, and resources are increasingly difficult to harvest. To make meaningful progress toward a circular economy, we need to reduce demands in the built environment. Despite extensive research over the past two decades, the practical impacts remain limited, leaving us with a significant gap between theory and practice. Our latest publication in @npj Urban Sustainability, "Accelerating Circularity Systemically: Three Directions for Impactful Research," co-authored with Angela Greco, Hilde Rem?y, and Vincent Gruis, explores how to bridge this theory-practice divide.
