Did you know Somaliland had a secret forest? As I embarked on the journey to Mader Moge, little did I know how deeply it would impact me. Two hours outside of Erigabo, our vehicle crept through rocky terrain, clinging to the mountainside in gear 1, with the majestic Daalo mountains in sight. The drive was slow, challenging, and yet, utterly awe-inspiring. I had always thought of Somaliland as a land of arid landscapes, but what I encountered in Mader Moge was nothing short of a revelation. The unexpected greenery, the lushness, and the thriving Boswellia trees stood as a testament to the hidden beauty of our land. It felt as though I had stumbled upon a secret, a rainforest nestled in the mountains, preserved and nurtured by the very communities we work to empower. This journey wasn’t just about seeing the trees; it was about understanding the deep connection these trees have with the people who depend on them. The Boswellia trees are more than just sources of frankincense—they are a symbol of resilience, tradition, and the enduring bond between the land and its caretakers. Visiting these areas and witnessing the vibrant greenery and robust Boswellia trees made me reflect on the rich potential that Somaliland holds. It reminded me of the significance of our mission at Beeyo Maal—to ensure that the communities who have protected and nurtured these lands for centuries are the ones who truly benefit from their resources. As we strive to build ethical and sustainable practices within the frankincense industry, I am committed to raising awareness about the hidden gems of Somaliland and the incredible people who care for them. Zanzibar Mangroves restoration Phase II?? #SOAZanzibar aims to build upon their mangrove restoration efforts while also driving sustainable livelihoods in the local community through the introduction of a beekeeping initiative. This was achieved through planting 1,000 mangrove seedlings in areas heavily impacted by mangrove cutting, while also offered comprehensive training to 60 individuals on effective mangrove planting techniques. ?? ??Also organized a community workshop to educate locals about beekeeping practices, equipped them with the necessary tools and beehives to initiate the project. The overarching goal is to provide the community with an alternative income source, thus reducing their dependence on mangrove cutting for firewood as their source of income. Talk Africa, a development-oriented media platform, has recently spotlighted the mangrove reforestation work being done on Funzi Island in Kwale County, Kenya, where Vlinder has one of its carbon projects. The article explains why mangroves, "warriors in the battle against climate change," play an important role in coastal ecosystems and community lives and interviews local community enthusiasts dedicated to their restoration. We’re happy to see the efforts of Vlinder and our partner UMITA Limited highlighted, particularly in educating the community about mangrove planting, guidance on selecting the best planting locations, and supporting the community by purchasing seedlings and creating planting jobs. Approximately 87% of Kwale County’s households rely on mangrove wood for fuel and construction, as mentioned in the publication. One of Rotary’s 7 core focuses is the ‘environment’, so we jumped at the opportunity to take part in the Treekly challenge, whose purpose is to plant trees to combat some of the excesses of climate change. In the context of this particular Rotary challenge, mangrove trees will be planted on the Kenyan coast near Mombasa. They are well known for their ability to absorb CO2 and improve general biodiversity. The challenge ran for the whole month of March and required each team member to walk a minimum of 5,000 steps a day. Our Leicester Club entered four teams of five, which were known severally as Leicester Tigers, Team Amazon, Walk with Hope and Walk with Impact. The first of these consisted of Barry Davies, Ed Cufflin, Richard Power, Chris Saul and me. The other three all came from our Impact Group and were helpfully coordinated by Diana Esho. In the event, all our Leicester Tigers team completed the minimum of 5,000 steps for every day in March and thereby guaranteed the planting of 155 mangroves, to which another 50 tees were added as part and parcel of our entry fee. So we achieved a maximum of 205 trees, and it is felt that the other three Impact teams more or less did the same. It is therefore a safe bet that our wider Club will have guaranteed the planting of over 800 trees! Our Leicester Tigers team currently believes it is in second place overall out of the 22 teams that signed up for the challenge. First place is likely to go to Chichele Conservationists, who together have completed just under 3 million steps, which comfortably beat our circa 2.2 million ( an average of 14,000+ per day) steps and thereby secure first prize. It would be fair to report that much fun was had along the way; that friendly banter ensued; and that we are each slightly fitter. Position the Tree: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the root collar (where the roots meet the trunk) is level with the ground. Avoid planting too deep or too shallow. Backfill and Water: Fill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly to settle the soil. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree, leaving some space around the trunk to prevent rot. Mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Support and Protect: If needed, stake the tree to provide support against wind and other elements. Use protective guards to shield young trees from animals and lawn equipment. Regular Care: Water your tree regularly, especially during dry periods. Prune dead or damaged branches to promote healthy growth. This tree was planted in 2022 in Teesdale, Victoria, and if you can't tell, it doesn't really need its tree guard for protection anymore It's been planted among thousands of other trees and shrubs to create the habitat that koalas in the area urgently need. Its rapid growth in just two years has blown us away. The best part is - trees like this are not uncommon in our planting sites. We've been planting trees for koalas since 2016, and we've learned a lot in that time. We know what kind of trees to plant and where to plant them to ensure they're thriving, not just surviving. These trees are safeguarding the future of koalas. It's not long until the 2024 tree planting season begins. This winter we aim to plant another 30,000 trees for koalas.
