When it comes to trimming shrubs in the summer, a trim is all that you should do. After the flush of spring growth, our shrubs are so big! However, summer is not the best time to reduce the height of your shrubs. When trimming in summer, only remove up to two-thirds of the current season's growth. Spring blooming shrubs need to be trimmed now (ideally before July 1) so the plant has a chance to form next year's flowers. Fall and early Spring are the best times to greatly reduce the overall size of your landscape plants. #landscapetips #landscapemaintenance #landscapemanagement

Look out for Choisyas flowering now. ?There are several varieties of Choisya but Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’is one of the most common - for a reason. It's not at all fussy, the glossy leaves are evergreen, its citrus-scented, pinky-white flowers persist for weeks sometimes repeating in late summer, and it makes a neat mound up to 2.5m each way. It can be kept smaller with careful pruning after flowering.? ? Because of all these qualities Choisya makes a great informal hedge or screen, but if you prefer it as a shrub, you could wreathe it with the pink, spring-flowering Clematis Alpine 'Pink Flamingo' or underplant it with the sky-blue Omphalodes cappadocica 'Cherry Ingram'.? 'Aztec Pearl' can be grown anywhere from full sun to shade although flowering will be less generous in a gloomy spot and it won't turn up its toes in a drought, provided you water it until established (see, I told you it was unfussy.)??? ? The only drawback is that it may suffer damage in hard frosts or fierce winds, so give it a sheltered spot to perform at its best. If it does suffer from winter damage, simply cut out the affected stems in spring, apart from that this obliging shrub needs little attention – a perfect plant. ?

Spring is in the air, and it's time to give your hydrangeas a little TLC! ?? But wait, before you grab those pruning shears, do you know if your hydrangea blooms on old or new wood? It's key to ensuring a season full of blooms. For those Bigleaf and Oakleaf beauties, a gentle trim to remove dead wood and a slight shape-up might be all they need. And for our Panicle and Smooth hydrangea friends, feel free to prune a bit more boldly to encourage vibrant growth and even more stunning flowers. Here's to a blooming fantastic season ahead but exercise caution with your hydrangeas during their blooming season. Pruning them at this time might lead to accidentally snipping off vibrant blooms. Also, attempting to shorten their stature is a fruitless endeavour; these resilient plants are designed to reach their natural height regardless. #GardeningTips #HydrangeaCare #SpringPruning #OakvilleRealtor #OakvilleRealEstate

??Spear grass has a clever way of dispersing its seeds. The seeds of spear grass are equipped with sharp, pointed tips and sometimes even barbs. This design isn't just for show; it helps the seeds latch onto the fur of animals that brush past the grass. ?? Imagine walking through a field, and your socks come out looking like a pin cushion – that's spear grass at work! As field guide Bryce explains to our guests here, spear grass also has seeds designed to drill into the soil. Once the seed comes in contact with the ground, changes in humidity can cause parts of the seed to move or twist, literally screwing the seed into the soil. This ingenious method ensures that the seeds are planted into the earth, where they have a better chance of growing into new plants. ?? Next time you spot some spear grass, why not try this trick and dazzle your friends with your nature know-how? Have you ever tried it? Does it work as brilliantly as nature intended? Let us know! ??? ??Video credit: Jeandra Swan ?? Podocarpus elongatus ‘Monmal’ is indeed an excellent plant for all the reasons listed. However, it is a selection which is marketed under the registered trademark, ICEE BLUE by Monrovia Growers. As a selection, it was never eligible to be patented. Remember, trademarks are NOT plant names. Trademarks identify origin NOT a specific plant. As counterintuitive as it may seem, there IS NO PLANT NAMED ICEE BLUE. ‘Monmal’ is grown and offered, (correctly) by many local growers who are adept at navigating the smoke and mirrors of marketing names. Norman’s Nursery offers a selection called ‘Crystal Blue’ - equally good if not identical and there are many excellent selections on the local market as well.
