Just over a year ago, I had an inspiring conversation with CommonGood Capital that still feels incredibly relevant today. As I reflect on the recent election and the discussions coming out of COP29, certain moments from that talk resonate even more deeply. Here’s why: 1. At its core, #innovativefinance is the engine that drives entrepreneurs and businesses creating real, lasting value for both people and planet. Across industries and sectors—whether water, energy, food, health, or education—the organizations and businesses that will shape tomorrow are rethinking how we do things. They’re imagining a world where food is produced sustainably; water is conserved, drinkable, and accessible; and education and healthcare are reliable and affordable. They’re blending capital and partnerships in groundbreaking ways, leaning into technology and regenerative AI to bring efficiency and reach. 2. In today’s polarized landscape, one thing is clear: progress doesn’t happen in isolation. Building authentic relationships across divides, grounded in trust, humility, and deep listening, is more important than ever. We need to come together, face-to-face, to move forward. 3. Another vital piece? Creating a society where all women can truly exercise their economic power benefits everyone. This movement needs to be inclusive, and we need men to be part of it. This means amplifying the voices of diverse entrepreneurs and also supporting remarkable women-led businesses in emerging economies, many of which are pushing past traditional boundaries and reshaping consumer behaviors. 4. We need storytelling that connects us, that brings the urgency of climate and equality to life and makes the opportunity clear. Just look at the Inflation Reduction Act: it’s spurred over 300 clean energy projects, created 109,278 jobs, and attracted $126 billion in investments, with much of this benefiting communities that typically don’t see such impact. That’s a story worth sharing, especially when bipartisan support is so rare. 5. Finally, we need a diversity of capital at the table. One of my most inspiring experiences was in Miami last year, where a private equity firm, a Fortune 500 company, a foundation committed to flexible philanthropy, and an innovative entrepreneur all came together to acknowledge how their different capital tools and expertise could tackle the climate and water crisis--together. Seeing people from all backgrounds and political views in one room, driven by a shared purpose, was a powerful reminder: when we unite, change happens. We have so much to gain when we break down silos, and invest strategically across the risk, return, and impact spectrum. That balance is how we thrive.
