My brilliant colleague Shameema Parveen has put together a first of its kind Summit, focusing on Achieving CALD Leadership in the Public Sector. The Australian Public Service has set a #CALDtarget for 24% leadership representation by 2030. Last month, CREW Portland's leadership team participated in an inspiring and thought-provoking discovery session focused on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the chapter and the commercial real estate industry. ? Facilitated by Ash Mitchell, Director of Corporate Operations at NAI Elliott and an active member of CREW Portland's DEI Committee, the session began with an insightful presentation on the neurology of DEI. Leaders then broke into small groups, led by committee members, to explore the role of DEI in the industry, reflect on its impact in their specific areas of expertise, and identify actionable themes for progress. ? Following this session, the CREW leadership team convened again at NAI Elliott’s offices to review data gathered from a DEI-focused survey distributed to the board and committee chairs. This collaborative effort marks the beginning of the committee’s work to build a meaningful and impactful DEI framework for 2025. ? In a time when DEI work is more critical than ever, CREW Portland remains committed to fostering inclusivity and equity in the commercial real estate community. ? NAI Elliott is inspired by the work Ash is doing and excited to see where this journey leads. As the year comes to a close, I’m reflecting on the milestones, lessons, and connections made along this journey. To everyone who has crossed paths with me—whether through discussions on anti-corruption, collective action, or purpose-driven leadership—thank you for being part of the story. This year was a reminder that the values we stand for matter deeply, especially when times are tough. Transparency, accountability, and integrity are not just ideals; they should be the northern star that guides our decisions and actions. Looking ahead, I’m inspired by the possibilities of shaping meaningful change through partnerships — whether it is by empowering communities, fostering innovation in governance, or championing purpose-driven organizations. Here’s to moving forward into the new year with hope, resilience, and a commitment to leave every place better than we found it. What is conventional business? To some, this could be a person in a suit with a briefcase in a office, but in my (new) industry, this could be a yawning with an Indigenous Elder on new camping locations for the the Explorer tour I've just returned from. Needless to say, these encounters significantly shift my perspective on business leadership and values. Unlike the corporate environment I was accustomed to, where business often revolves around financial transactions and competitive strategies, the approach here was rooted in community well-being, environmental stewardship, and sustainability. The Elder demonstrates leadership through empathy, a deep connection to the land, and a commitment to preserving traditions for future generations - all the while with a laser focus on driving tourism to the region and promoting country (also known as the outback). This interaction highlighted to me that effective business practices are not confined to urban settings or modern industries. Instead, they can also be deeply ingrained in Indigenous communities' traditional knowledge and sustainable practices. This experience has led me to reflect on the broader implications of what we consider successful in business. It has shown me the importance of incorporating values of community care, environmental responsibility, and long-term vision into our business models. Incorporating strategic #corporatesocialresponsibility into a firm’s operations is a tremendously effective way to increase its #value proposition. Strategic CSR is more than just corporate philanthropy, it is the implementation of applying a CSR perspective to the core operations of the firm and strategic planning. It involves creating value for a broad range of stakeholders by solving the market’s problems utilizing the firm’s different areas of expertise, and focuses on value creation in the medium to long term. According to Peel Maher, a global Executive Search, Leadership Coaching and Talent Advisory firm, “companies that focus on going that extra mile to provide additional value and to provide support to struggling communities can reap many benefits. Companies that look beyond profits and provide value for shareholders can reap genuine benefits.” When I look at firms like Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s who are blazing the trail in using strategic CSR to create value, they have key elements in common: ?? An uncompromising ethos of doing good. ?? They religiously stick to quality, integrity & sustainability. ?? ”Doing good” permeates into the culture of the company. ?? In the last six months I have travelled and worked extensively in North America and Mexico, and I'm back again at the moment. The people I have been working with have included some incredibly brilliant executives of Nasdaq listed companies, and some loving, collaborative, clever, and capable women from Peru, Mexico and North America. This has been inspiring for me personally and for the Dattner Group team. What we stand for, our expertise, and our deep and abiding commitment to supporting an approach to leadership that builds a sustainable future has been central. However, more than anything else, I carry forward the power of personal agency, particularly during turbulent times.
