The other side of renewable energy. Solar development comes amid increasing competition for farmland.?Common solar farm construction practices, including clearing and grading large sections of land, also can lead to significant erosion and major runoff of sediment into waterways without proper remediation.?#renewables??#renewableenergy??#power? https://lnkd.in/eRs3masi

"One of the objections to utility-scale solar power that I hear most often is that local communities will be left to cover the costs of cleanup at the end of a project’s life. "But state and local rules in nearly all of the country are clear about who pays: The developer or the owner is responsible for restoring the land once a project is no longer operating. "The problems arise from the complexity of the regulations in many places, which provide opportunities for people who oppose solar and are looking for concerns that will resonate with the public. "A new report from NC Clean Energy Technology Center, 50 States of Solar Decommissioning, offers a comprehensive review." #solarpowerplant

We know that solar energy is a key component of a clean energy future, but what does a solar array do to the land and soils on which it sits? That’s the question that Hannah Winn, a student in the Master of Environmental Studies Program, has been investigating over the last year under the mentorship of Professor Alain Plante of the Department of Earth and Environmental Science. Starting last spring, Winn has made multiple trips to Franklin County, Pennsylvania, to study and take soil samples on the Great Cove 2 solar project, a facility developed by energy company AES that, together with the co-located Great Cove 1 solar project, will provide roughly 70 percent of Penn’s electricity needs beginning this year. The project takes the University a solid step closer to its goal of carbon neutrality by 2042. “It’s been super eye-opening to go to the solar farms,” Winn says. “In school everything is pretty theoretical, so to actually stand there in the solar facility and learn about the logistics involved, see how many people are involved in a long-term project like this, has been personally very impactful.” In a partnership between AES, Penn’s Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services, and the Environmental Innovations Initiative, AES is providing financial support for Winn’s research and other renewable energy scholarship at Penn. Winn’s analysis of the biological, chemical, and physical properties of the soil on the solar fields will help her and other scientists understand how solar field construction and operation impact soil health. As she writes her master’s capstone this spring, she’ll be outlining best management practices for solar arrays that could boost the carbon retained in soil, an outcome that could not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with solar facilities, but may also better preserve the underlying land for future agricultural use. “Soil is important for everything: for agriculture, for building, for food,” says Winn. “with this research project we’re looking at not only what happens when we put solar projects on soil, but also considering what happens when we leave.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/3HPaLAH

?? Proud and Excited for Ohio’s Sustainable Energy Future! ?? I was both impressed and thrilled when I discovered the approval of the Oak Run Solar Project here in Ohio. Not only will it be Ohio's largest solar project and battery storage system, but the U.S.'s largest agrivoltaics project! This isn’t just about generating renewable energy—it's a forward-thinking example of how we can integrate agriculture to combine solar energy with productive land use.?? The potential is bright for Ohio, and we need to continue to embrace innovative solutions like dual-use solar, where we can maximize the land potential for both energy and food production. Looking forward to seeing the positive impact that revenue from this project will bring to local communities! https://lnkd.in/giNqJRJW #SolarEnergy #Agrivoltaics #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #OhioInnovation #CleanEnergy

????Floating PV plants "Floating photovoltaics (FPV) is a new technology in which a solar photovoltaic (PV) system is placed directly on the surface of a body of water rather than on land or on the roofs of buildings. Floating solar power plants solve the problem of large areas to place and overheating of modules in hot climates, which contributes to a drop in electricity generation..."
