(Check on YouTube on how to) 2??Personal statement or statement of purpose: this I addressed in Day 3, please kindly go back to Day 3 to check the requirement and the information on what to write in your personal statement. 3??Letter of Recommendation (LOR): In USA you don’t upload the letter of recommendation directly on the website during your application, Rather you write the name and the email of your recommender and then the school that you’re applying to will send an email to your recommender and he/she will then upload the LOR Via the link that be provided. Also the same method if you are applying for scholarships in ????. TIPS on LOR by Saheed Kolawole Choosing Letter Writers -First, how many: 3-4 -Second, who: academic, clinical, research -All Ph.D. or co-signed by Ph.D. -No politicians, family friends, practicing therapists, mostly. University faculty or staff. -A word about adjunct, assistant, associate, professor- do a SSI count. Choose people who know you well, who can speak to different aspects of your experience, and who can and will take the time to write a strong letter. Provide Letter Writers With: Thumbnail sketch that includes -name and contact info -how they know you -your GRE and GPAs - bulleted items that you want them to include e.g. Psi Chi president, APA convention, focused area(s) of study, honors or awards -redundancy is fine 4??Test scores: GRE/GMAT(This is an extremely powerful tool that will help you secure funding, but sometimes it’s a MUST for a program, while others might be optional, but if you want to be competitive enough PLEASE WRITE IT) IELTS/TOEFL 5??Research proposals: this depends on the university and program. Now let’s talk about program selection: ??This a crucial step even in the beginning of everything, because it will help you to understand clearly the kind of program you want to go for and help you identify the professors that you want to go with. Always go for programs that matches directly with your Bsc/HND degree or masters. Spend good amount of time on program sorting and searching, check through the program requirements to make sure that you have all the required docs. I have read and reviewed 8 essays for grad-school scholarship applications in the past month. They look like my own applications from one year ago. Trust me, they were bad. Some advice: 1. To begin with, are you sure you need a Master's degree in a specific course/program? What is it going to add to your profile, what do you bring to the table? Read that again because if you are not sure why you need a Master's, let alone a scholarship, it's not leading to well-drafted essays. 2. Be specific. For example, "Innovation" means a lot of things. "I will innovate the healthcare/education system in Pakistan" - Okay. First of all, what was the problem that you think needs innovation? Where in the world? How? When you choose a specific program having clear requirements from you, what makes you think you can get into it? Make sure to align each sentence of your essay that it builds up to serve a purpose. Think why YOU should be accepted into the program instead of somebody from hundreds/thousand applications who knows exactly what they will do in and after the Master's. Whereas all you have stated is that you want to innovate a system. Makes sense? 3. Connect the dots between each sentence, each para. Please do not write an essay that makes the reader sad, instead of being convinced. Your job is to connect your hardship to a tangible goal. Did something inspire you? Are you capable of achieving something despite the unfortunate circumstances around you? Is your essay depicting your strengths or just taking up space for flowery language? Remember, admissions and scholarships are earned, not given away! Make your essays worth a reader's while.

How Nigerian University Admitted 10-Year Old, JAMB Registrar Exposes Rot The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has exposed the scandal of violating age limit for admission seekers in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Oloyede revealed that some universities would even admit students as young as 10 years in a desperate attempt to flout the legal age limit of 18. Speaking during JAMB policy meeting in Abuja, Oloyede cited examples of universities like UNILAG and OAU, with a minimum age requirement of 16 years. He also narrated a case of a candidate who applied for a master’s degree at a university in Germany, only to be discovered that she had graduated from a Nigerian university at the age of 15. First, the GRE appears to predict not only traditional dimensions of study success (such as GGPA), but it also shows a potential to predict the quality of graduate students’ research performance. ? Second, the GRE places students from different educational backgrounds on one scale and therefore allows for a comparison of their skills, required at the entrance to a graduate school. This fact not only facilitates the work of admissions committees in terms of their invested time and efforts, but it also makes the admissions decisions transparent to different stakeholders (including applicants and their parents). ? Third, being able to submit the GRE scores might benefit students from not very well known and established HEIs across the world and within their own country (e.g., universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands). It takes a lot of work to get grants in the United States. How to make yourself stand out: To Get a Master's At the graduate level, research is the most important thing for getting grants. 1. Do a lot of research before writing. Showcase Your Knowledge: Show what you can do in school by doing well-done study projects or theses in your field. Put out research papers: Having work published in peer-reviewed journals or at workshops will greatly improve your application. They show how you can make a difference in your area and set you apart. Focus on Impact: The topics of your research should be important and relevant to your area of study or the focus of the scholarship. 2. Get in touch with professors Find Faculty: Look into the professors at the universities you're interested in who are experts in your area. How to Write an Effective Email: Say hello, talk about the kinds of study you're interested in, and say why you want to work with them. Name some ideas or papers that inspire you. Get their support: Professors can help you get scholarships or money for research jobs by recommending you for them. 3. Scholarships based on research Research excellence is often a top priority for scholarships like Fulbright, DAAD, and university-specific prizes. Talk about your past work, your plans for the future, and how they fit with the scholarship's goals. 4. Make your application fit your needs Focus your Statement of Purpose on what you've done in your study so far, how it has affected others, and how you plan to build on that while you are getting your master's. Use letters of recommendation from mentors who can attest to your study skills. In this article, I will focus on academic programs. Future articles will cover other aspects. A university's academic programs are at the heart of its reputation. Quality programs provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. Local and international professional accreditation is a key part of this. It means that an independent organization has reviewed the programs and found them to meet high standards. This gives students confidence that they will receive a good education. Programs that are well-designed, up-to-date, and relevant to current industry standards attract students and faculty alike. Accreditation from recognized bodies ensures that these programs are of high quality. Regarding PhD or MSc applications… When I first applied for postgraduate studies in the Uk, I was confused about the process. The first time when I applied for my MSc and then when I applied for my PhD. Having gone through both process. Here are a few thoughts - ????One fundamental question you need to ask yourself is - are you looking for a funded position or do you have alternative sources of funding. If you are a 100% sure you need funding, then put the same energy into seeking for funding as you do for admission. It’s a common occurrence to have admission and no funding for this. I have seen this happen time and time again. ???? There is some planning that needs to go into applications. It’s difficult to decide on postgraduate education the same year you apply. Usually successful candidates have a lag of time where they plan ahead for applications. I think deciding 6 to 9 months ahead of time is prudent and then working towards your application. ???? To be successful at funding, you need to understand application cycles in the UK. In practice, many course take in prospective students till April of the following year. The reality, however is that only the first batch of applications are eligible for university-specific scholarships (the deadline for this is usually December of the application year). If you are keen on funding, then your deadline for application is December. ???? Appreciate there are more postgraduate positions than funding spaces. Say for example, there are 10 admissions, there might be funding for 1 to 2. Others might look for funding elsewhere or self fund. The point here is 40 people competing for 10 positions is different from 40 competing for 1 to 2 funded positions. This means the bar tends to be higher when you are seeking funding. This in part explains why getting admission is the easier bit. In summary be clear about your application goals, plan ahead, appreciate key facts about the process. Interesting mixed methods assessment on the impact contextual offers on high tariff English HE Institutions. Such offers were found to widen participation of students from the areas assessed as the most deprived and/or who were in receipt of free school meals. Therefore, from a social justice and inclusion strategy to level the playing field, there is at now good evidence of their effectiveness in highly selective HE institutions. However, a current media text project we are working on suggests that media discourse around such offers continues to problematise them, and specifically in regards to their use in the most selective institutions.
