What if virtual reality could help ease pain and bring comfort to patients in palliative care? ???? A systematic review by Moutogiannis et al. (2023) (https://lnkd.in/gzBrfdqK) dives into how VR is transforming care for hospice and palliative patients. Across 14 studies (2018–2023), VR was used to manage symptoms—offering experiences like serene nature scenes, cherished locations, or even journeys through the solar system! ????? Using head-mounted displays (or sometimes laptops ??), patients immersed themselves in these tailored VR experiences. Pain was the main focus, with assessments taken before, during, after, and hours later to measure both benefits and any potential side effects. ????? The studies confirmed VR’s safety, efficacy, and feasibility, but emphasized the need for larger trials, randomized controlled studies, and expansion to pediatric populations. ???? These efforts could unlock even more potential for VR in improving quality of life. ???? I’m passionate about sharing the latest evidence and practical tools in VR/AI for palliative care. If you’re as excited as I am about the future of this field, connect with me to stay informed!??? #PalliativeCare #VirtualReality #Connection #CompassionInCare #EmergingTechnology

What if virtual reality (VR) could bring relief to patients in palliative care—beyond just physical symptoms? ????? A scoping review by Moloney et al. (2023) (https://lnkd.in/gTACMKvd) explored VR use in palliative care and found promising results! Patients across various care settings reported that VR was usable, feasible, and acceptable. ???? While the evidence on biopsychosocial outcomes is still limited, VR is gaining momentum as a potentially powerful intervention for enhancing patient care. ????? The review calls for more research to strengthen the evidence base—particularly around how VR impacts physical, emotional, and social outcomes, and how best to measure its effectiveness. ????? VR has the potential to transform palliative care, offering patients moments of comfort, connection, and meaning during challenging times. ????? There are interesting insights in the evolution of XR in healthcare, and in one 2018 study that showcased such economic gains with relation to the use of VR therapy in pain management for hospitalized patients. Since hospitals have started to integrate VR, opioid use can be lessened, and patients' lengths of stay are shortened, saving a lot of money. The study showed that, on average, $5.39 is saved per patient, but the potential savings could amount to as high as $98.49 for those eligible and willing to use VR. As a UX/XR designer and researcher with a background in healthcare, I'm confident that there is a lot that can be done to make the experience of patients and practitioners better by harnessing the power of technology. The study only points out the possibility for change that VR can bring in health care. Let's keep pushing boundaries and making better patient outcomes using XR technologies! https://lnkd.in/dSP9s64P
